NATO has announced plans to develop virtual rapid response capabilities \u201cto respond to significant malicious cyber activities.\u201d<\/p>\n
The plans were\u00a0unveiled<\/a>\u00a0in a declaration published following the NATO Summit in Madrid, Spain, last week. The latest summit took on extra significance in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine earlier this year, amid fears of the conflict spilling beyond the current borders into NATO territory. Referring to the war, the declaration read: \u201cWe, the Heads of State and Government of the North Atlantic Alliance, have gathered in Madrid as war has returned to the European continent. We face a critical time for our security and international peace and stability.\u201d<\/p>\n Among other areas, the declaration outlined an agreement between member countries \u201con a voluntary basis and using national assets, to build and exercise a virtual rapid response cyber capability.\u201d The military alliance acknowledged that \u201cwe are confronted by cyber, space and hybrid and other asymmetric threats, and by the malicious use of emerging and disruptive technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n NATO heads of state and governments participating in the summit also pledged to accelerate the delivery of non-lethal defense equipment to Ukraine, including boosting the country\u2019s cyber-resilience.<\/p>\n Russia has launched\u00a0numerous cyber operations<\/a>\u00a0against Ukraine since it began the invasion in February. This includes targeting\u00a0Ukraine\u2019s national telecommunications provider in April<\/a>, causing significant internet outages across the region.<\/p>\n Commenting on the announcement, Adam Marr\u00e8, CISO of\u00a0Arctic Wolf<\/a>, said: \u201cAs the declaration outlines, NATO currently faces cyber and other asymmetric threats from multiple nations. The announcement of this cyber rapid response capability is a recognition that we must do more to coordinate the efforts to combat ongoing and prepare for future nation-state conducted and\/or sponsored cyber campaigns.<\/p>\n \u201cA virtual rapid response cyber capability will greatly increase NATO\u2019s capability to have a more coordinated and effective response to significant malicious cyber activities.<\/p>\n \u201cThis capability will likely be similar to the EU Cyber Rapid Response Teams (CRRT) that have already been created and have been\u00a0deployed in the Ukraine conflict<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Discussing the requirements needed to create such a capability, Marr\u00e8 continued: \u201cThe new NATO cyber response force will need to develop common cyber operations toolkits with incident detection, prevention, and response capabilities to have an effective coordinated response.<\/p>\n \u201cIn addition, they will need to identify and select team members with different domains of expertise, including incident response, forensics and vulnerability assessment that can form cohesive and holistic teams that can rapidly deploy virtually.\u201d<\/p>\n
