Tropas de artiller\u00eda de Ucrania, se adiestran en el empleo de proyectiles guiados de 155mm, para ser disparados desde los obuses M-777 A2, que actualmente est\u00e1n siendo provistos a ese pa\u00eds, como parte de la ayuda de muchas naciones, para enfrentar la invasi\u00f3n de Rusia. Ukrainian troops are now training on\u00a0M777A2 towed Howitzer<\/a>\u00a0that is optimized for firing GPS-guided artillery shells. These are the same shells that were promised as part of Washington\u2019s most recent $400 million military aid package.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The M777A2 comes with a digital fire control system that includes GPS aiming capability along with standard digital fire control systems that come with the\u00a0M777A1 already in Ukraine<\/a>. The training is said to be occurring in Germany.<\/p>\n

The more advanced cannons are optimized for firing the M982 Excalibur guided projectile<\/a>, which can change course in flight using extendable fins and is, therefore, far more accurate than traditional artillery shells, especially over long ranges.\u00a0To use the guided round, troops input GPS location data into the gun’s guidance unit before sending it downrange. More complex salvos can also be programmed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the most-recent security assistance package, the U.S. Defense Department has only said it will be sending 1,000 rounds of\u00a0155 mm howitzer rounds<\/a>\u00a0that provide \u201cgreater precision\u201d than standard shells for the M777.\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0on July 13 reported that the precision 155mm rounds\u00a0were indeed Excalibur<\/a>\u00a0guided artillery shells.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Moving to Ukraine proper, seen for the first time in Ukrainian service were long-promised M113 armored personnel carriers<\/a>. The U.S.\u00a0included 200 of the Vietnam-era APCs<\/a>\u00a0in an earlier package of military aid. Several other countries,\u00a0including Australia<\/a>, are also sending M113s to Ukraine but the video below is the first time U.S.-donated vehicles \u2014 of which the U.S. military has hundreds in storage at pre-positioned depots in Europe \u2014 were seen being used by the Ukrainian Army.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After the past week, during which Ukrainian forces\u00a0targeted huge stockpiles of Russian artillery\u00a0<\/a>ammunition and explosives in part with U.S.-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, the effects of those weapons can be seen from space. Using NASA data that pinpoints ongoing fires, the maps below show the almost-complete elimination of Russian fire on Ukrainian frontlines in the east. Dubbed by some war observers as the \u201cHIMARS effect,\u201d the Ukrainians have harnessed the weapon\u2019s power to\u00a0hone in on specific high-value targets<\/a>\u00a0and are using them so effectively that the\u00a0U.S. is sending another four launchers<\/a>. That will bring the number of HIMARS in Ukraine to 12, on top of tracked M270 multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) donated by other\u00a0NATO nations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
