Su capacidad \u201cdazzler\u201d permite adem\u00e1s enceguecer o confundir los sensores \u00f3pticos de otros buques y sistemas guiados del oponente.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-y0sc5o\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The U.S. Navy&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Arleigh Burke<\/em>\u00a0class destroyer USS\u00a0<em>Preble<\/em>\u00a0is now armed with a High-Energy Laser with Integrated Optical Dazzler and Surveillance system,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/31843\/navy-littoral-combat-ship-will-soon-be-armed-with-a-laser-weapon-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">or HELIOS<\/a>.\u00a0<em>Preble<\/em>\u00a0is the first of the service&#8217;s ships to be equipped with HELIOS, which is a 60-kilowatt class directed energy laser weapon, and is also the first to have any such weapon integrated with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/39508\/how-the-aegis-combat-system-is-evolving-to-dominate-naval-warfare-of-the-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Aegis combat system<\/a>. The destroyer joins a small, but growing number of Navy vessels equipped\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/43521\/uss-portland-uses-its-experimental-laser-to-fry-a-floating-target-in-the-middle-east\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with directed energy weapons<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/34663\/navy-to-add-laser-weapons-to-at-least-seven-more-ships-in-the-next-three-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">various types<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Lockheed Martin, the prime contractor behind HELIOS, issued\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.lockheedmartin.com\/2022-08-18-Lockheed-Martin-Delivers-Integrated-Multi-Mission-Laser-Weapon-System-to-the-Navy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a press release last week<\/a>\u00a0announcing the installation of the system onboard\u00a0<em>Preble<\/em>, but pictures on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/usspreble\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the ship&#8217;s official Facebook page<\/a>\u00a0show it had been installed weeks before then. You can read more about Lockheed Martin successes in turning the idea of operationally viable laser weapons like HELIOS, developments that had been largely in the realm of science fiction for decades, into a reality in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/37646\/laser-weapons-separating-fact-from-fiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this past\u00a0<em>War Zone<\/em>\u00a0feature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Preble<\/em>&#8216;s new laser is installed in front of the ship&#8217;s main superstructure on a modified platform that was originally designed to accommodate a 20mm Vulcan cannon-armed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/22783\/taiwan-eyes-phalanx-point-defense-systems-to-defend-mountainside-air-force-bases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mk 15 Phalanx Close-in Weapon System<\/a>\u00a0(CIWS). Flight IIA subvariants of the\u00a0<em>Arleigh Burke<\/em>\u00a0class like<em>\u00a0Prebl<\/em>e never had a CIWS installed in this position, but these ships do still have another one toward the stern.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>HELIOS, as its name indicates, is a multi-purpose system. It is powerful enough to damage or destroy certain target sets, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/39913\/multiple-destroyers-were-swarmed-by-mysterious-drones-off-california-over-numerous-nights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">smaller drones<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/31521\/navy-confirms-boat-swarm-seen-alongside-carrier-group-in-this-satellite-image-was-iranian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boats<\/a>. In this way, it offers something of a limited substitute for the lost CIWS and provides a layer of defense against these targets, which can be particularly threatening to ships like\u00a0<em>Preble<\/em>\u00a0when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/drone-swarms-that-harassed-navy-ships-demystified-in-new-documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">operating in swarms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The system can also act as a &#8220;dazzler&#8221; to blind or confuse optical sensors on enemy ships and aircraft, and optical seekers on incoming missiles and other munitions. Lockheed Martin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>On\u00a0<em>Arleigh Burke<\/em>\u00a0class destroyers like\u00a0<em>Preble<\/em>\u00a0and other ships equipped with versions of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/39508\/how-the-aegis-combat-system-is-evolving-to-dominate-naval-warfare-of-the-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Aegis Combat System<\/a>, HELIOS promises to be even more capable and flexible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Rich Calabrese, Director of Surface Navy Mission Systems for Lockheed Martin, had the following to say about HELIOS and Aegis during a broader interview\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/39508\/how-the-aegis-combat-system-is-evolving-to-dominate-naval-warfare-of-the-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with\u00a0<em>The War Zone<\/em>&#8216;s<\/a>\u00a0own Tyler Rogoway about the latter system last year:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We\u2019re continuously upgrading the multi-source integration infusion capability of the Aegis weapon system and looking to bring in new weapons and sensors and do coordinated hard kill and soft kill. Directed energy weapons\u2026 We&#8217;re really already integrating the\u00a0HELIOS Laser Weapon System\u00a0with the Aegis Weapon System CSL [Common Source Library] in our lab here in New Jersey. In fact, we&#8217;ve&#8230; The guy who&#8217;s now managing the laser program&#8230; He let me know the other day that we recently fired a laser here under the control of the Aegis Weapon System computer program. So, we&#8217;re building in the capability to do that weapon coordination and to do the hard kill, soft kill coordination in an automated fashion, working with the HELIOS Weapon System.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Lockheed Martin is already on contract to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.lockheedmartin.com\/2018-03-01-Lockheed-Martin-Receives-150-Million-Contract-to-Deliver-Integrated-High-Energy-Laser-Weapon-Systems-to-U-S-Navy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deliver at least one more<\/a>\u00a0HELIOS system to the Navy for integration on another\u00a0<em>Arleigh Burke<\/em>\u00a0class destroyer, and there is certainly the potential for additional examples to eventually make their way onto various classes of ships. Lockheed Martin designed the system with future capability growth in mind, as well, and there has already been talk about increasing the maximum power of the laser\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/31843\/navy-littoral-combat-ship-will-soon-be-armed-with-a-laser-weapon-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to 150 kilowatts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>&#8220;HELIOS represents a solid foundation for incremental delivery of robust and powerful laser weapon system capabilities.\u201d Rick Cordaro, the Lockheed Martin Advanced Product Solutions vice president, had added in his statement last week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The Navy has made clear that HELIOS is just one part of its full directed energy ambitions, which are now set to eventually include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/43795\/navy-is-betting-big-on-high-power-microwave-weapons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high-power microwave-based systems<\/a>, too. USN.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As part of the Navy&#8217;s broader directed energy weapon efforts, a number of other\u00a0<em>Arleigh Burke<\/em>\u00a0class destroyers, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/30941\/mysterious-laser-turret-appears-on-us-navy-destroyer-uss-dewey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USS\u00a0<em>Dewey<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/41525\/heres-our-best-look-yet-at-the-navys-new-laser-dazzler-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USS\u00a0<em>Stockdale<\/em><\/a>, are now equipped with the less powerful\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/30941\/mysterious-laser-turret-appears-on-us-navy-destroyer-uss-dewey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Optical Dazzling Interdictor, Navy<\/a>\u00a0(ODIN). Unlike HELIOS, the laser on ODIN is only capable of being used as a dazzler, though the complete system also has secondary surveillance capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"USS Stockdale, DDG-106 AN\/SEQ-4 ODIN: Optical Dazzling Interdictor, Navy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1zKFICo8TOU\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>San Antonio<\/em>\u00a0class amphibious transport dock ship USS\u00a0<em>Portland<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/43521\/uss-portland-uses-its-experimental-laser-to-fry-a-floating-target-in-the-middle-east\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">now equipped with another laser<\/a>\u00a0directed energy weapon, the Laser Weapon System Demonstrator Mk 2 Mod 0. This is a 150-kilowatt class system with somewhat similar capabilities that are more in line with HELIOS, though it is, of course, more powerful.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"USS Portland (LPD 27) tests LWSD laser system\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZZyev1rfds0\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>A 150-kilowatt class system open the door to being able to engage larger and more complex threats, including low-flying cruise missiles and aircraft, as well as artillery rockets. Earlier this year, the Navy, in cooperation with Lockheed Martin, demonstrated the ability of a solid-state laser directed energy weapon\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/israels-iron-beam-laser-successfully-downs-rockets-drones-mortars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to successfully shoot down<\/a>\u00a0a target drone acting as a surrogate for a subsonic cruise missile.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>A laser weapon called the Laser Layered Defense (LLD) system was employed in that test, which was conducted at the U.S. Army&#8217;s White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A First for Layered Laser Defense\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WT3wjK9Jj6Q\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>HELIOS is set to begin at-sea testing on\u00a0<em>Preble<\/em>\u00a0starting sometime in the 2023 Fiscal Year, which begins on October 1, 2022.
