ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. \u2014 The U.S. Army will establish an office dedicated to offensive cyber and space capabilities next year amid rapidly shifting priorities, officials said.<\/p>\n
The office, dubbed Program Manager Cyber and Space, will fall under the Program Executive Office for Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors, which tests and fields equipment such as\u00a0aerial jamming pods<\/a>, biometric information systems and battlefield navigation tools.<\/p>\n Its creation will shift offensive cyber responsibilities away from an existing PEO IEW&S enclave tasked with electronic warfare and cyber.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s one of the things we\u2019re driving toward,\u201d Brig. Gen. Ed Barker, the\u00a0deputy at PEO IEW&S<\/a>, said Aug. 30 during a roundtable with reporters at the Open Innovation Lab. \u201cSo we\u2019re definitely trying to realign to some of those emerging priorities and areas.\u201d<\/p>\n The offensive cyber portfolio includes the Joint Common Access Platform, a program initiated by the Army a few years ago, according to Mark Kitz, the leader of PEO IEW&S. ManTech, a defense technology firm, in 2020\u00a0won a $265 million contract<\/a>\u00a0to support the platform for nearly four years.<\/p>\n Offensive cyber is defined as \u201ccyberspace operations intended to project power by the application of force in or through cyberspace,\u201d according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.<\/p>\n JCAP provides underlying infrastructure for Department of Defense cyber missions and target acquisition,\u00a0C4ISRNET previously reported<\/a>. It\u2019s part of the Joint Cyber Warfighting Architecture, an overarching vision for U.S. Cyber Command.<\/p>\n PM Cyber and Space, reporters were told, will be led by a colonel, or O-6.<\/p>\n The breakout is necessary, in part, because of increased workloads and demands\u00a0spanning the military services<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause we\u2019ve seen mission growth in that area,\u201d Kitz said, \u201cwe\u2019re going to spin off.\u201d<\/p>\n
