(Photo by Alex Wong\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"3\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>\u201cThe strongest element of this package is the Patriot battery systems, something that will strengthen our air defense significantly,\u201d said Zelensky, clad, as usual, in olive drab. \u201cThis is a very important step to create a secure base for Ukraine and that&#8217;s the only way we will be able to deprive the terrorist country and their terror attacks [on] our energy sector, our people and our infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"4\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>But while Zelensky is grateful, a Pentagon official earlier on Wednesday acknowledged that Patriots, though more advanced than anything else Ukraine has in its air and missile defense arsenal, are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/16652\/missile-defense-madness-myth-of-perfect-patriots-magic-thaad-and-the-icbm-shield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no \u201csilver bullet.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"5\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Though Patriots are \u201ccapable of intercepting cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and aircraft, it&#8217;s important to put the Patriot battery in context,&#8221; a senior U.S. defense official told reporters, including from\u00a0<em>The War Zone<\/em>\u00a0during a Wednesday afternoon Pentagon briefing. \u201cFor air defense, there is no silver bullet. Our goal is to help Ukraine strengthen a layered integrated approach to air defense that will include Ukraine&#8217;s own legacy capabilities as well as NATO standard systems. (Lockheed Martin photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"7\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The discussion comes against the backdrop of a potential boost to Russia&#8217;s armaments in the form of highly accurate Iranian short-range ballistic missiles (SRBM). Ukraine, already struggling with the challenge of protecting against current aerial threats, could face much greater problems if\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/ukraine-situation-report-russia-relying-on-degraded-ammo-says-pentagon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iran actually delivers<\/a>\u00a0those SRBMS against which the country currently has little protection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"8\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>As\u00a0<em>The War Zone<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/an-iranian-ballistic-missile-storm-is-on-ukraines-horizon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has explored in depth previously<\/a>, substantial amounts of short-range Iranian ballistic missiles could have massive impacts on the conflict given Ukraine&#8217;s near total lack of defenses against them. This is especially concerning when it comes to the vulnerability of Ukraine&#8217;s already beaten-down power infrastructure. The Patriot system, while not perfect, would be a huge boon to Ukraine&#8217;s efforts to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/deal-to-finally-send-patriot-missiles-to-ukraine-imminent-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protect against this threat.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"9\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>But it won&#8217;t be an immediate boost.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The Patriots won\u2019t provide any assistance to Ukraine in the near-term.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"10\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>\u201cPatriot does require training and we expect it will take several months to ensure Ukrainian forces have the training they need to employ it successfully,\u201d said the senior defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official added that the U.S. is working with Ukraine to \u00a0&#8220;assist them to be able to manage and integrate a variety of [air defense] capabilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"11\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Other than saying the training will begin \u201cvery soon,\u201d the official, citing operational security concerns, declined to offer a timeline. They also declined to outline how many Ukrainian troops will be trained on the system, where that training will take place, or when the system will become operational in Ukraine. Nor would the official say exactly where the U.S. will draw the system from or how many interceptor missiles will be provided.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"12\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>When asked by\u00a0<em>The War Zone<\/em>\u00a0whether the U.S. will provide the more advanced\u00a0Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/16486\/enhanced-patriot-missile-enters-full-rate-production-will-sell-like-hotcakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PAC-3 MSE<\/a>) missiles or older PAC-3 missiles, a senior U.S. military official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, declined comment, citing operational security concerns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"13\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The newer interceptors enable Patriot batteries to cover far more area and have greater defensive capabilities against tactical ballistic missiles than the older versions.\u00a0With upgrades to the missile&#8217;s motor, control system, software, and front-end thermal protection, among other modifications,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/16486\/enhanced-patriot-missile-enters-full-rate-production-will-sell-like-hotcakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it is a more effective and flexible weapon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11612\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11612\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PAC3MSEJ.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PAC3MSEJ.webp 1920w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PAC3MSEJ-300x176.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PAC3MSEJ-1024x600.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PAC3MSEJ-768x450.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PAC3MSEJ-1536x900.webp 1536w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PAC3MSEJ-820x480.webp 820w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Pentagon declined to say if it will provide Ukraine with the more advanced Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement missiles. (Lockheed Martin photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"14\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Regardless of which interceptor the U.S. will provide, Russia\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/patriot-missile-batteries-in-ukraine-would-be-top-targets-for-russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has threatened to attack the system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"15\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>In addition to providing few details about the Patriot systems being provided to Ukraine, the Pentagon officials offered little insight into the aerial precision-guided munitions included in today\u2019s package. The senior U.S. defense official declined to say what kind of bombs the U.S. might include in such a package, how Ukraine would adapt them for their aircraft or whether it would find other ways to deliver those munitions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"16\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>We\u2019ve previously written about how the Biden administration<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/what-jdam-smart-bombs-could-do-for-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0plans to supply Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0with the Joint Direct Attack Munition, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/new-look-at-air-forces-ship-killing-smart-bomb-in-action-seeker-details-revealed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JDAM<\/a>, precision air-to-ground kits that turn unguided bombs into so-called \u201csmart bombs.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"17\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Each JDAM kit consists of the guidance package and control section, tailfins for steering, and strakes attached to the bomb for stability and a limited gliding capability. This kit is then mated to an existing bomb body, normally a variant or derivative of the ubiquitous Mk 80 series of weapons. The JDAM is capable of hitting fixed targets in any weather and is so-called &#8216;fire and forget&#8217; for the launching aircraft.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"18\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>You can read much more about how they work, and how they could work for Ukraine in our coverage\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/what-jdam-smart-bombs-could-do-for-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AFRL Bench To Field \u2013 JDAM\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IwmEA7RIRaQ\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"19\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Though the U.S. and allies have provided Ukraine with tens of billions of dollars of aid, Zelensky has, understandably, asked for more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"20\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>\u201cWhat&#8217;s going to happen after Patriots are installed?\u201d Zelensky, the former comedian, asked jokingly at the joint press conference with Biden. \u201cAfter that, we will send another signal to President Biden that we would like to get more Patriots.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"21\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>At the end of that press conference, Biden and Zelensky were asked by a Ukrainian journalist about why the U.S. has not provided Ukraine with everything it needs, including Army Tactical Missile System (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/what-himars-rocket-systems-can-and-cant-do-for-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATACMS<\/a>), which have a range of about 200 miles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"22\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>That sparked some laughs between the two leaders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"23\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>&#8220;His answer is yes,&#8221; Biden said of Zelensky.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"24\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>&#8220;I agree,&#8221; Zelensky replied, prompting laughter from the audience of dignitaries, military leaders and journalists.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11613\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GettyImages-1245772848.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GettyImages-1245772848.webp 1920w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GettyImages-1245772848-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GettyImages-1245772848-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GettyImages-1245772848-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GettyImages-1245772848-1536x1024.webp 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Presidents Biden and Zelensky have a light-hearted moment during their joint press conference. For two reasons,&#8221; Biden responded. &#8220;One: There is an entire alliance that is critical to stay with Ukraine, and the idea that we would give Ukraine material that is fundamentally different than is already going there would have a prospect of breaking up NATO and the European Union and the rest of the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"27\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Secondly, those allies, said Biden, \u201care not looking to go to war with Russia, not looking for a third world war. And I think it can all be avoided by making sure that Ukraine is able to succeed on the battlefield.
