La compa\u00f1\u00eda finlandesa SAKO, reconocida mundialmente por la calidad de sus armas de precisi\u00f3n, ser\u00e1 el n\u00facleo base del acuerdo. Typical AR-15\/M16\/M4s blow propellant gas, siphoned from the barrel when a cartridge is fired, directly into the main action, a method of operation known as direct impingement.<\/p>\n<p>With regards to the new small arms partnership between Finland and Sweden, the Swedish government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmv.se\/aktuellt--press\/aktuella-handelser\/fmv-tecknar-avtal-om-eldhandvapen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will lead the procurement<\/a>, buying what has been reported locally as a \u201cconsiderable\u201d number of weapons under an initial contract that\u2019s worth 78 million Euros, or around $85 million. The guns will be used to replace the country&#8217;s existing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gotavapen.se\/gota\/ak\/ak4_5\/ak5_history.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AK4 and AK5 assault rifles<\/a>\u00a0(Swedish-made versions of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/modernfirearms.net\/en\/assault-rifles\/germany-assault-rifles\/hk-g3-eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heckler &amp; Koch G3A3<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/modernfirearms.net\/en\/assault-rifles\/belgium-assault-rifles\/fn-fnc-eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FN FNC assault rifles<\/a>, respectively) and the Accuracy International\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/snipercentral.com\/swedish-psg-90\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psg 90<\/a>\u00a0sniper rifle currently in Swedish service. Other new weapons could come sometime after that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"10\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>For Sweden, in particular, there is an urgent requirement to modernize the small arms used by its armed forces, with the AK4 in use since the 1960s and the AK5 having been developed in the early 1980s. Peter Fristedt via Wikimedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe agreement signed today will affect virtually all Swedish Defense Forces personnel, who will in the long term have access to new modern weapons,\u201d explained Jonas Lotsne, director of the Ground Systems Department at the Swedish Defense Materiel Agency, or FMV. \u201cWe are now taking a big step towards replacing practically all the weapons in our Defense Forces, and that is very gratifying,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"12\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>For Finland, the first phase of the program will see it purchase an undisclosed batch of assault rifles for field testing, placing orders worth around 700,000 Euros, or approximately $755,000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"13\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Finland, too, is looking forward to a wide-ranging overhaul of its small arms inventory, which has long been provided by SAKO. This is, of course, well in line with Finland&#8217;s move to join NATO in the wake of Russia&#8217;s all-out invasion of Ukraine last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"16\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>It remains to be seen exactly what mix of 5.56x45mm and 7.62x51mm guns Finland might adopt in the future. The country&#8217;s armed forces, especially its special operations community, does already have limited numbers of rifles and machine guns in those calibers, including a 7.62x51mm Sako &#8216;AR&#8217; variant known as the M23. Those guns have been used to replace Soviet-designed 7.62x54mmR\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/modernfirearms.net\/en\/sniper-rifles\/standart-caliber-rifles\/russia-standart-caliber-rifles\/dragunov-svd-eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dragunov SVD designated marksman rifles<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicalfirearms.info\/post\/644504226669772801\/finlands-762-tkiv-85-sniper-rifle-the-762\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bolt-action Tkiv 85s sniper rifles<\/a>. The initial framework agreement runs for 10 years, followed by three seven-year option periods until 2053.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"18\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Regarding possibilities for cooperation, beyond the procurement process for the weapons themselves, Sweden and Finland will have expanded opportunities in terms of actual weapon use, training, ammunition procurement, and future development paths.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-sv5g30\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"19\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Today\u2019s framework agreement is the latest expression of a broader effort by Finland and Sweden to jointly procure weapons and related technologies. That plan also involved jointly buying new infantry anti-tank weapons, although those were not mentioned in today\u2019s announcement. ANDERS WIKLUND\/AFP via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And while neither country has yet gained membership in the NATO alliance, that\u2019s widely seen as only a matter of time,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/ukraine-situation-report-turkey-cuts-nato-membership-deal-with-finland-sweden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">despite some pushback<\/a>\u00a0from Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>The background to these two neutral countries seeking NATO membership, of course, is Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which has seen the Nordic countries, among others, rapidly reassess their defense priorities.
