The high-temperature\u00a0<span class=\"glossaryLink\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px 0px 1px; border-image: initial; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; text-decoration: none !important; color: #000000 !important; border-color: initial initial #000000 initial; border-style: initial initial dotted initial;\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;alloy&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A mixture of two metallic elements typically used to give greater strength or higher resistance to corrosion.&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{&quot;attribute&quot;:&quot;data-cmtooltip&quot;, &quot;format&quot;:&quot;html&quot;}]\">alloy<\/span>\u00a0could be used to build stronger and more durable parts for airplanes and spacecraft.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-170\" class=\"ezoic-adpicker-ad\"><\/span>NASA has demonstrated a breakthrough in 3D printable high-temperature materials that could lead to stronger, more durable parts for airplanes and spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>A team of innovators from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/tag\/nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/tag\/ohio-state-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Ohio State University<\/a>\u00a0detailed the characteristics of the new alloy, GRX-810, in a peer-reviewed paper published in the journal\u00a0<em>Nature<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis superalloy has the potential to dramatically improve the strength and toughness of components and parts used in aviation and space exploration,\u201d said Dr. Tim Smith of NASA\u2019s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, lead author of the <em>Nature<\/em>\u00a0paper. Smith and his Glenn colleague Christopher Kantzos invented GRX-810.<\/p>\n<p>Smith and his team employed time-saving computer modeling, as well as a laser 3D printing process that fused metals together, layer-by-layer, to create the new alloy. Credit: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/glenn\/2022\/nasa-s-new-material-built-to-withstand-extreme-conditions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GRX-810<\/a>\u00a0is an oxide dispersion strengthened alloy. In other words, tiny particles containing oxygen atoms spread throughout the alloy enhance its strength. Such alloys are excellent candidates to build aerospace parts for high-temperature applications, like those inside aircraft and rocket engines, because they can withstand harsher conditions before reaching their breaking points.<\/p>\n<p>Current state-of-the-art 3D printed superalloys can withstand temperatures up to 2,000 degrees\u00a0<span class=\"glossaryLink\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px 0px 1px; border-image: initial; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; text-decoration: none !important; color: #000000 !important; border-color: initial initial #000000 initial; border-style: initial initial dotted initial;\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Fahrenheit&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The Fahrenheit scale is a temperature scale, named after the German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit and based on one he proposed in 1724. In the Fahrenheit temperature scale, the freezing point of water freezes is 32 \u00b0F and water boils at 212 \u00b0F, a 180 \u00b0F separation, as defined at sea level and standard atmospheric pressure.&amp;nbsp;&lt;\/div&gt;\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{&quot;attribute&quot;:&quot;data-cmtooltip&quot;, &quot;format&quot;:&quot;html&quot;}]\">Fahrenheit<\/span>. Compared to those, GRX-810 is twice as strong, over 1,000 times more durable, and twice as resistant to oxidation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new alloy is a major achievement,\u201d said Dale Hopkins, deputy project manager of NASA\u2019s Transformational Tools and Technologies project. \u201cIn the very near future, it may well be one of the most successful technology patents NASA Glenn has ever produced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A team of contributors from Glenn, NASA\u2019s Ames Research Center in California\u2019s Silicon Valley, NASA\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and The Ohio State University co-authored the Nature paper.<\/p>\n<p>GRX-810 was developed under NASA\u2019s Transformational Tools and Technologies project, with support from the agency\u2019s Game Changing Development Program.<\/p>\n<p>Reference: \u201cA 3D printable alloy designed for extreme environments\u201d by Timothy M.
