Durante a\u00f1os, la citada fuerza ha utilizado esa regi\u00f3n para evaluar diferentes tipos de plataformas aut\u00f3nomas, en situaciones operativas reales y misiones complejas. El USV observado en este caso, es el Arabian Fox de la empresa L3 Harris. Su peque\u00f1o tama\u00f1o, velocidad de 40 nudos y multiplicidad de sensores para realizar vigilancia y reconocimiento, lo hacen especialmente apto para detectar y participar en la neutralizaci\u00f3n de amenazas, como minas marinas y el ataque de otros USV con cargas explosivas.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A semi-autonomous drone boat recently helped escort a number of U.S. naval vessels during a recent high-profile transit through the volatile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/22577\/iran-to-practice-blockading-strait-of-hormuz-as-saudis-say-mandeb-strait-is-no-longer-safe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>\u00a0linking the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"2\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The group of ships that were part of the transit included the U.S. Navy&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Arleigh Burke<\/em>\u00a0class destroyer USS\u00a0<em>Thomas Hudner<\/em>\u00a0carrying senior commanders. For years now, the service has been using this particular region as a place to test and evaluate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/navys-task-force-59-to-keep-tabs-on-iran-with-armada-of-drones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new uncrewed platforms through real-world missions<\/a>, such as keeping watch on Iranian forces and helping to guard high-value friendly assets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"3\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The Navy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/7961078\/us-navy-us-coast-guard-transit-strait-hormuz-with-unmanned-systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released the picture<\/a>, seen at the top of this story, of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.l3harris.com\/newsroom\/editorial\/2023\/04\/l3harris-forward-deploys-autonomous-maritime-capabilities-deliver-manned\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the L3Harris Arabian Fox<\/a>\u00a0uncrewed surface vessel (USV) out in front of the other ships in the group as they passed westward through the Strait of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf on August 6 earlier today. Beyond USS\u00a0<em>Thomas Hudner<\/em>, the Navy&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Lewis and Clark<\/em>\u00a0class cargo ship USNS\u00a0<em>Amelia Earhart<\/em>\u00a0and the U.S. Coast Guard&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Sentinel<\/em>\u00a0class cutter USCGC\u00a0<em>Charles Moulthrope<\/em>\u00a0are also seen in the image.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"4\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.centcom.mil\/MEDIA\/PRESS-RELEASES\/Press-Release-View\/Article\/3486793\/centcom-commander-conducts-strait-of-hormuz-transit-and-visits-united-arab-emir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">had announced yesterday<\/a>\u00a0that its commander, U.S. Army Gen. Michael Kurilla, as well as Navy\u00a0Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, had joined the\u00a0<em>Thomas Hudner<\/em>\u00a0as it made the transit. Cooper is head of Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) and U.S. Fifth Fleet. This is not the first time Kurilla and Cooper have done something like this. CENTCOM<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Very similar to the Maritime Autonomy Surface Testbed\u00a013 (MAST-13)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.l3harris.com\/newsroom\/press-release\/2020\/05\/l3harris-integrates-mast-13-autonomous-surface-vehicle-royal-navy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that L3Harris built<\/a>\u00a0for the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) in the United Kingdom, Arabian Fox is a 13-foot-long USV\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/navyrecognition.com\/index.php\/naval-news\/naval-news-archive\/2023\/april\/13070-us-navy-s-mast-13-usv-transits-strait-of-hormuz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly capable<\/a>\u00a0of reaching speeds up to 40 knots and having a maximum at-sea endurance of 36 hours. It is equipped with an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.l3harris.com\/all-capabilities\/wescam-mx-10ms-maritime-surveillance-and-reconnaissance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MX-10MS<\/a>\u00a0sensor turret with electro-optical and infrared full-motion video cameras, as well as robust communication and artificial intelligence (AI) enabled control suites.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"L3Harris | WESCAM MX&#x2122;-10MS Best of\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D5fQ_sfxPvs\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"6\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Arabian Fox\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.l3harris.com\/all-capabilities\/asview-control-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can sail semi-autonomously<\/a>\u00a0along set routes and features an autonomous collision avoidance capability that allows it to sail safely together in close proximity to other vessels. During the USV&#8217;s time in the Middle East already, L3Harris has demonstrated the ability to control it using line-of-sight datalinks, via a mesh network made up of various assets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"7\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Arabian Fox has already made multiple transits of the Strait of Hormuz alongside other U.S. naval vessels this year, but the one on August 6 was particularly significant given the presence of Gen. Kurilla and Vice Adm. USN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"8\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Helping to provide additional situational awareness as part of a larger group of naval vessels, especially high-value assets like warships carrying top officials, is fully in line with the kinds of mission sets that the Navy has been looking at for smaller USVs. The additional set of &#8216;eyes&#8217; that a platform like Arabian Fox can provide is especially relevant in the Strait of Hormuz where the potential threat picture is diverse and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/31521\/navy-confirms-boat-swarm-seen-alongside-carrier-group-in-this-satellite-image-was-iranian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">there is limited space to maneuver<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"9\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>If Iran were to try to block access to the Strait of Hormuz, it would be able to call upon an arsenal that includes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/22804\/iran-fired-ballistic-missile-during-drills-where-it-practiced-blockading-the-strait-of-hormuz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">missiles<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/41871\/everything-we-just-learned-about-the-fatal-iranian-drone-attack-on-a-tanker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kamikaze drones<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/10235\/naval-mines-are-a-growing-threat-near-the-mandeb-strait\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">naval mines<\/a>. In addition to fleets of small crewed fast attack boats that they can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/31521\/navy-confirms-boat-swarm-seen-alongside-carrier-group-in-this-satellite-image-was-iranian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">use to swarm larger vessels<\/a>, the Iranians also have remotely operated suicide boats. This is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/19860\/yemens-houthi-rebels-reportedly-attacked-a-saudi-oil-tanker-in-the-red-sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">capability they have demonstrated<\/a>\u00a0as a real threat through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/7769\/attack-on-saudi-frigate-off-yemen-was-made-by-drone-boat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their assistance to Houthi rebels<\/a>\u00a0in Yemen. The value of explosive-laden drone boats has only been underscored more recently by Ukraine&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/ukraines-unprecedented-mass-drone-boat-attack-was-a-wakeup-call\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">active use<\/a>\u00a0of them\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/ukrainian-drone-boat-scores-direct-hit-on-russian-warship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">against Russian ships<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/drone-boats-used-in-kerch-bridge-strike-reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other targets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"10\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Historically, smaller crewed patrol boats,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2023\/04\/26\/last-cyclone-patrol-crafts-leave-u-s-navy-many-will-serve-in-foreign-navies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which the Navy<\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/40844\/navy-confirms-it-wants-to-ditch-its-very-young-mk-vi-patrol-boats-in-new-budget-request\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">been steadily divesting<\/a>, have provided this kind of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/40535\/warning-shots-fired-after-iranian-vessels-swarm-american-missile-submarine-in-strait-of-hormuz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">close escort in the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, often together with larger warships, and similar waterways elsewhere around the world. Close-in defense is particularly important when it comes to countering swarms of small boats, crewed or uncrewed. When it comes to defending against drone boats in the future, it may well be the case that the best option is the employment friendly ones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"11\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) type missions have also been a key focus\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/navys-task-force-59-to-keep-tabs-on-iran-with-armada-of-drones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for the Navy&#8217;s Task Force 59<\/a>, to which Arabian Fox is currently assigned.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/42302\/new-navy-task-force-will-be-all-about-bringing-unmanned-capabilities-to-the-middle-east\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Created in 2021<\/a>, Task Force 59 has been using strategic waterways around the Middle East as real-world environments to test and evaluate new uncrewed platforms, including aerial drones, USVs, and uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUV), as well as related AI-driven technologies. The unit, which other branches of the U.S. military are now emulating, has also been contributing to real missions, like helping monitor malign Iranian activities. This has already led to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/irans-attempted-theft-of-u-s-navy-drone-boat-is-likely-a-sign-of-whats-to-come\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">direct altercations with Iranian forces<\/a>, including one incident where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/iran-briefly-seized-two-u-s-navy-unmanned-sailboats-in-the-red-sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">they briefly seized a pair<\/a>\u00a0of the task force&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/43487\/u-s-navy-tests-unmanned-sailboat-off-jordan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saildrone USVs<\/a>\u00a0in the Red Sea last year.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Iran tries to seize U.S. sail drone 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/417vEblGm1o\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"12\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>&#8220;We have said all along that Iran poses the most pressing threat in the region. There have been a number of growing threats, from a maritime perspective,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/42987\/video-shows-u-s-destroyers-very-intimate-standoff-with-iranian-vessels-over-seized-oil-tanker\">facing commercial vessels<\/a>\u00a0that are transiting regional waters, and those threats are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/38533\/south-korea-sends-its-forces-into-the-strait-of-hormuz-after-iran-seizes-tanker\">well reported<\/a>,&#8221; Navy Cdr. Timothy Hawkins, a spokesperson for NAVCENT and Fifth Fleet,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/navys-task-force-59-to-keep-tabs-on-iran-with-armada-of-drones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told\u00a0<em>The War Zone<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in an interview earlier this year. &#8220;And Iran has often been behind them. That&#8217;s a common thread.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"13\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s why we feel that strengthening our existing partnerships and accelerating innovation are key. And those two things are intertwined,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;And those two things are reflected in our establishment of Task Force 59 and how we have moved out and are integrating these new technologies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"14\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The Strait of Hormuz is a particularly strategic waterway and potentially dangerous chokepoint. Nearly 90 percent of all oil produced in the Persian Gulf, which accounts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.strausscenter.org\/strait-of-hormuz-about-the-strait\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for around 20 to 30 percent<\/a>\u00a0of all global oil exports, exits the region via the Strait. Iran, which controls one side of the Strait, routinely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/22577\/iran-to-practice-blockading-strait-of-hormuz-as-saudis-say-mandeb-strait-is-no-longer-safe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threatens to blockade it in retaliation<\/a>\u00a0for actions taken by the United States and others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1el4t9i\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"15\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Just in the past month or so, the U.S. military has significantly reinforced its presence in this part of the world, including with the deployment of the USS\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/17\/politics\/us-jets-middle-east-iran\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Thomas Hudner<\/em>\u00a0and F-35 and F-16 fighters<\/a>. This is in response to a string of seizures and attempted seizures of commercial vessels by Iranian forces earlier this year. This includes an incident last month\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/07\/05\/us-navy-says-iran-tried-to-seize-two-oil-tankers-fired-on-one.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">where Iranian personnel opened fire<\/a>\u00a0on a commercial tanker off the coast of Oman, but where American naval forces intervened to prevent its capture.
