Una especie en particular (en guaran\u00ed, aproximadamente \u201chierba dulce\u201d) de la zona fronteriza entre Paraguay y Brasil tiene hojas de sabor extremadamente dulce, y con la que los pueblos guaran\u00edes han usado como endulzante por siglos. El g\u00e9nero fue nombrado por el m\u00e9dico y bot\u00e1nico espa\u00f1ol Pedro Jaime Esteve (Petrus Jacobus Stevus; 1500\u20131556), en ese entonces profesor de la Universidad de Valencia. La determinaci\u00f3n de la estructura tom\u00f3 varias d\u00e9cadas.
