This marks the first time in some\u00a0<em>six decades\u00a0<\/em>that any Army unit has gotten all-new small arms, with a completely new caliber of ammunition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1hrs883\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"2\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The Army\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2024\/03\/29\/army-has-finally-fielded-its-next-generation-squad-weapons.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced yesterday<\/a>\u00a0that soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, &#8220;accepted Next Generation Rifles and Automatic Rifles [on March 28] in preparation for New Equipment Training (NET) in April.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1hrs883\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"3\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>In April 2022, Sig Sauer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/heres-everything-we-now-know-about-the-armys-new-squad-rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was chosen<\/a>\u00a0by the Army over competitors including General Dynamics and Textron Systems to deliver the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) system. The NGSW family consists of Sig&#8217;s M7 rifle,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/01\/18\/new-name-selected-for-armys-next-generation-squad-weapon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previously known<\/a>\u00a0as the XM5, as well as the company&#8217;s belt-fed M250 light machine gun based on the same platform. The M157 features a variable magnification optic (1&#215;8 magnification), backup etched reticle, laser rangefinder, ballistic calculator, atmospheric sensor suite, and compass \u2014 constituting a major upgrade from the kinds of optics currently issued to much of the U.S. Army. Vortex<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1hrs883\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"5\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The NGSW system is being introduced in order to replace the service&#8217;s aging but iconic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/10147\/the-army-is-once-again-looking-to-replace-the-5-56mm-cartridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5.56mm M4 carbines<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/22281\/army-to-replace-m249-saws-with-new-squad-automatic-rifles-only-in-close-combat-units\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M249 Squad Automatic Weapons<\/a>\u00a0(SAW).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1hrs883\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"6\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Back in 1965, the Army officially adopted the initial version of the 5.56x45mm AR-15\/M16, the M16A1 rifle; a design that has retained several core aspects, despite significant evolution, since that time. This ensures that the gas is kept away from the gun&#8217;s key components, enhancing overall reliability in some conditions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1hrs883\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"9\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Precisely how many weapons were received by the 1st Battalion remains unclear, and we&#8217;ve reached out to the Army for more information. Publicly available Army documents show the authorized equipment inventory for a typical infantry battalion, at least as of 2013, included 565 M4A1 carbines and 54 M249 SAWs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1hrs883\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"10\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Compared to the M4 and M249 guns they are replacing, which use NATO\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/10147\/the-army-is-once-again-looking-to-replace-the-5-56mm-cartridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">standard 5.56x45mm<\/a>\u00a0cartridges, the M7 and M250 guns\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/27159\/this-gun-paired-with-new-6-8mm-ammunition-could-be-the-armys-next-standard-issue-rifle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">use 6.8x51mm<\/a>\u00a0cartridges. It was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/army-looking-for-replacement-for-m249-squad-automatic-weapon-2017-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">back in 2017<\/a>\u00a0that the Army first issued requirements for NGSW prototype submissions from industry. Personnel from across the U.S. military \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/12\/20\/army-to-field-new-rifle-machine-gun-and-optic-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including<\/a>\u00a0the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell \u2014 have contributed more than 25,000 hours during the development and testing of the NGSW system, the Army\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2024\/03\/29\/army-has-finally-fielded-its-next-generation-squad-weapons.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1hrs883\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"14\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Yet the road to getting there hasn&#8217;t been easy going.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/27159\/this-gun-paired-with-new-6-8mm-ammunition-could-be-the-armys-next-standard-issue-rifle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In early 2019<\/a>, the service had hoped to equip the first unit with the new weapons by 2022. In December 2023, officials\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/12\/20\/army-to-field-new-rifle-machine-gun-and-optic-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0<em>Army Times\u00a0<\/em>that full fielding of the system would start with a then-unidentified unit in the 101st Airborne Division by the second quarter of fiscal year 2024.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1hrs883\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"16\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>&#8220;The process of developing and fielding new equipment is never without challenges and setbacks and speed bumps,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2024\/03\/29\/army-has-finally-fielded-its-next-generation-squad-weapons.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0Lt. Col. Mark Vidotto, the NGSW lead for the Soldier Lethality Cross-Functional Team (SL CFT) at Fort Moore, Georgia. &#8220;It was a team effort from start to finish.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1hrs883\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"17\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>Delays to the fielding of a new squad weapon system with a completely new caliber of ammunition were always likely to occur. This effort, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/heres-everything-we-now-know-about-the-armys-new-squad-rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we&#8217;ve highlighted previously<\/a>, represents a colossal undertaking for the Army. Sig was awarded a 10-year, $20.4 million initial production contract in April 2022 for about 40 total weapons \u2014 25 XM5s and 15 XM250s \u2014 used to develop its production line. However, the deal has an overall ceiling of $4.7 billion; accommodating the procurement of up to 250,000 rifles for the Army and other other U.S. military services, as well as potential foreign military sales customers,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/heres-everything-we-now-know-about-the-armys-new-squad-rifles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a>\u00a0to the Army.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-paragraph paragraph css-1hrs883\" data-og-block-area=\"article-blocks\" data-og-block-nth=\"19\" data-og-block-type=\"core\/paragraph\" data-rawhtml=\"1\">\n<p>The service has also noted in the past that by the time the first guns would be fielded, an adequate mass of ammunition for both combat and training going forward would be stockpiled. &#8220;When it&#8217;s time for them to field,&#8221; retired Brig. Gen.
