The service is pursuing the Multi-Domain Artillery Cannon (MDAC) as a way to further\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/huge-boost-to-armys-air-defenses-planned-in-new-force-structure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expand its already growing<\/a>\u00a0air and missile defense capabilities, especially in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/39278\/air-force-f-35-stealth-fighters-are-now-operating-from-guams-austere-airfield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expeditionary scenarios<\/a>\u00a0and when it comes to defending against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/cruise-missile-shield-could-see-sam-sites-return-to-critical-locales-across-u-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increasing cruise missile threats<\/a>. DOD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cResponses must clearly demonstrate technical qualifications, capability, and experience to provide a prototype MDAC solution with battery-level prototype deliveries no later than Q4FY27 [fourth quarter Fiscal Year 2027] followed by an Operational Demonstration (OD) in FY28,\u201d the RCCTO RFI says. \u201cThe MDAC OD in FY28 will be composed of prototypes delivered under this RCCTO effort combined with similar prototypes delivered under separate Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO) Other Transaction Agreements (OTAs) developed for the Hypervelocity Gun Weapon System (HGWS).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon the conclusion of the OD the prototype will be delivered to soldiers as a residual combat capability,\u201d the RFI adds.<\/p>\n<p>The Army is looking to award the MDAC prototype contract in the third quarter of Fiscal Year 2025, according to RCCTO. Those prototypes will consist \u201cof a wheeled self-propelled 155 mm weapon system and HVP-compatible propelling charge solution,\u201d the RFI says.<\/p>\n<p>HVP here stands for \u201chypervelocity projectile.\u201d Though no specific HVP round is mentioned in the RFI, the U.S. military has displayed MDAC and related Hypervelocity Ground Weapon System (HGWS) concepts in the past alongside\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/40938\/long-in-development-hypervelocity-rounds-for-navy-railguns-and-deck-guns-killed-off-in-budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a BAE Systems design<\/a>\u00a0originally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/12716\/watch-the-navys-electromagnetic-railguns-autoloader-feed-a-multi-shot-salvo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">developed to be fired<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/40875\/the-navys-railgun-looks-like-its-finally-facing-the-axe-in-new-budget-request\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a now-canceled Navy railgun<\/a>. USN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Versions of the dart-shaped precision-guided BAE HVP round have been test-fired from Navy five-inch naval deck guns and 155mm howitzers in the past. The HVP developed for use in the railgun was also a kinetic projectile designed to destroy targets through the sheer force impact after reaching a reported peak speed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2018\/01\/86000-5600-mph-hyper-velocity-missile-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">of 5,600 miles per hour<\/a>, but the other types were expected to have high-explosive warheads. USN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For the new MDAC prototypes, the Army also says it wants a wheeled platform with high \u201ctactical mobility\u201d that also offers a significant degree of \u201csurvivability through the use of rapid emplacement and displacement\u201d tactics.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the prototyping effort, contractors can either supply their own 155mm weapon or ask for one from the Army. The complete weapon system should be heavily automated and offer \u201cremote weapon firing capability,\u201d \u201chigh rates of fire with [the] HVP,\u201d \u201cdeep magazine capacity,\u201d and \u201crapid ammunition resupply time (manual and automated),\u201d according to the RFI.<\/p>\n<p>The weapon also needs to be mounted on the wheeled platform in such a way as to offer a \u201clarge launch window\u201d against incoming threats \u201cenabled through large elevation and traverse range limits.\u201d No mention is made of what kind of range parameters the Army is eyeing for MDAC.<\/p>\n<p>The computer-generated MDAC\/HGWS video, seen below, that the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory previously released shows a notional 6\u00d76 wheeled design with the gun mounted in a large turret at the rear of the vehicle that is also transportable via a C-130 cargo plane.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Base Defense\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/egM7ojN2N34\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to targeting, \u201cthe HVP will communicate with off-board sensors that track both the HVP and the threat and complete the interception of the target,\u201d RCCTO\u2019s RFI explains. \u201cThe MDAC will interface with an external\u2026 Command and Control Battle Manager (C2BM) and the Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) Battle Command System (IBCS).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More specific details about how the HVP projectiles the MDAC system fires will be cued and\/or guided are not provided. IBCS is a new Army air and missile defense-focused network architecture intended to offer a common way to link together all manner of sensors and weapon systems, as you can read more about in this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/37175\/heres-what-the-armys-long-awaited-super-air-defense-network-can-actually-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">past\u00a0<em>War Zone<\/em>\u00a0feature<\/a>. The Army hopes to begin fielding IBCS operationally either\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensedaily.com\/army-to-field-first-unit-with-ibcs-in-december-as-germany-japan-express-interest\/army\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">by the end of this year<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/insidedefense.com\/daily-news\/army-targeting-mid-2025-fielding-ibcs-initial-battalions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">early next year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Joint Multi Domain Integration Achieved with IBCS\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FXOozWECnI4\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. military has already demonstrated the basic ability of a 155mm howitzer to down an aerial target with a BAE Systems HVP at least once, during a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/36345\/mq-9-reaper-howitzer-rocket-toting-f-16-all-shoot-down-mock-cruise-missiles-in-huge-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">larger U.S. Air Force-led test event<\/a>\u00a0in 2020, video from which is seen below. An Army\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/24238\/armys-new-huge-barrel-packing-155mm-howitzer-doubles-range-to-40-miles-in-tests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">XM1299 tracked self-propelled howitzer<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/03\/11\/us-army-scraps-extended-range-cannon-artillery-prototype-effort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">program that has since been canceled<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 brought down\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/39863\/high-performance-target-drone-washes-up-on-florida-beach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a BQM-167 target drone<\/a>\u00a0acting as a surrogate for a subsonic cruise missile with an HVP in that instance. Other MDAC\/HGWS test events\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/counter-cruise-missile-cannon-firing-navy-railgun-ammo-being-eyed-by-air-force\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have at least been scheduled<\/a>\u00a0since then.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"US Military Test New Advanced Hypervelocity Weapons System | MFA\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q5qkE2dXfa4\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Work on MDAC (and the related HGWS) has been primarily linked in the past to the growing demand for added defenses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/23682\/usaf-wants-units-to-rapidly-build-and-fly-from-new-bases-in-the-middle-of-a-future-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at forward operation locations during<\/a>\u00a0future expeditionary and distributed operations. The U.S. military is increasingly focused on these concepts of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/construction-of-airbase-on-tinian-island-in-case-guam-gets-knocked-out-has-begun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">operations to mitigate ever-growing threats<\/a>\u00a0to larger established bases,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/cruise-missile-shield-could-see-sam-sites-return-to-critical-locales-across-u-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even ones<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/land\/enclosures-to-defend-f-15es-from-drone-attacks-eyed-at-seymour-johnson-afb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the continental United States<\/a>. Ever more capable\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/30058\/lets-talk-about-this-previously-unseen-ground-launched-missile-that-china-just-leaked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">air, sea, and ground-launched cruise missiles<\/a>, including designs claimed to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/is-russia-really-using-zircon-hypersonic-cruise-missiles-in-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">capable of reaching hypersonic speeds<\/a>, have emerged as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/42788\/critical-u-s-infrastructure-now-needs-surface-to-air-missile-protection-during-a-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a particular area of concern<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Future MDAC batteries could be employed against other aerial threats and be used to protect larger bases, as well. Depending on how fast the final MDAC design can engage one target and then move on to the next one, the system might also be especially valuable for tackling high-volume strikes and doing so in a more economical way than with traditional surface-to-air missiles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrent air and missile defense munitions require onboard guidance and targeting components that drive high munition procurement costs,\u201d the new MDAC RFI notes. \u201cIn contrast, the MDAC seeks to significantly reduce munition costs and enhance expeditionary utility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What the price of a single HVP for use with MDAC might be in the end is unknown, but the kinetic railgun version of BAE\u2019s design was estimated in the past\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2019\/01\/08\/navy-quietly-fires-20-hyper-velocity-projectiles-destroyers-deckgun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">to cost $100,000<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2018\/01\/86000-5600-mph-hyper-velocity-missile-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">less<\/a>. This is substantially cheaper than any of the surface-to-air missiles in the Army\u2019s inventory today, including current-generation shoulder-fired Stingers that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/weapons-contractors-price-gouging-pentagon-60-minutes-transcript-2023-05-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">cost around $400,000 apiece<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SOLDIERS: Stinger Dome\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wLXrcDo9wds\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. military is facing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/sea\/greek-warship-guns-down-houthi-drone-in-new-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a complex air<\/a>, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/news-features\/first-look-at-houthi-kamikaze-drone-boat-that-struck-cargo-ship-in-red-sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">maritime, threat environment<\/a>\u00a0in and around the Red Sea right now as Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen continue their anti-ship campaign in the region that underscores the potential value of MDAC. The Houthis have been employing a mix of kamikaze drones and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/the-anti-ship-missile-arsenal-houthis-are-firing-into-the-red-sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cruise and ballistic missiles<\/a>, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/news-features\/small-and-agile-houthi-drone-boat-shown-obliterating-ship-during-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drone boats<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/graphics\/ISRAEL-PALESTINIANS\/SHIPPING-ARMS\/lgvdnngeyvo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">other weapons<\/a>. The group is the first ever to have employed an anti-ship ballistic missile in anger. The U.S. military has already expended significant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/sea\/navy-has-fired-around-100-standard-series-missiles-at-houthi-drones-missiles-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">numbers of surface-to-air missiles<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/news-features\/phalanx-ciws-downs-houthi-missile-dangerously-close-to-destroyer-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other munitions<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/news-features\/replenishing-missiles-used-to-down-houthi-threats-will-require-extra-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and at great cost<\/a>, in defending against these threats, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/news-features\/u-s-carries-out-first-preemptive-strike-on-houthi-sam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to strike Houthi forces ashore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, MDAC is not expected to be a solution to any air and missile defense threats on its own, but instead offer an additional readily deployable layer of protection when used in conjunction with other capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The Army is already in the midst of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/huge-boost-to-armys-air-defenses-planned-in-new-force-structure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a bigger push to dramatically enlarge<\/a>\u00a0its air and missile defense forces, especially when it comes to shielding forces abroad and at home from cruise missiles and drones. This will include increasing the number of Patriot surface-to-air missile systems,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/inadequate-u-s-patriot-missile-force-size-highlighted-by-middle-east-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which are in extremely high demand<\/a>. The service is in the process of fielding a host of new short and medium-range air and missile defense systems, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/army-eyes-supersonic-cruise-missile-interceptor-for-new-air-defense-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">palletized Enduring Shield launchers<\/a>\u00a0loaded with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/29158\/the-aim-9x-sidewinder-may-finally-evolve-into-a-completely-new-and-longer-range-missile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">AIM-9X Sidewinders<\/a>\u00a0and 8\u00d78\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/40311\/the-army-has-started-fielding-its-first-new-short-range-air-defense-system-in-decades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stryker light armored vehicles armed with<\/a>\u00a0Stingers and 30mm automatic cannons. Additional counter-drone capabilities like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/drastic-increase-in-army-coyote-drone-interceptor-purchase-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Coyote Block 2 interceptor<\/a>, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/sponsored-content\/production-standard-laser-air-defense-weapons-to-equip-army-this-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high-power laser<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/42868\/competition-to-build-an-army-stryker-that-zaps-drone-swarms-heats-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microwave directed energy weapons<\/a>, are in the mix.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Raytheon Missiles &amp; Defense proves counter-UAS effectiveness against enemy drones\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RrRScxnDfrk\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Given that they will be based around 155mm howitzers, there is also the potential for MDAC vehicles to be employed outside of the air and missile defense role if required.
