Avanzando en el\u00a0desarrollo\u00a0de productos que aporten capacidades\u00a0 de\u00a0defensa\u00a0contra UAS\u00a0(C-UAS) a las fuerzas en operaciones, Northrop Grumman ha presentado su sistema \u201cBushmaster M230LF (Link Fed)\u00a0dual feed chain gun<\/em>\u201d. Fue dise\u00f1ado tanto para neutralizar \u00a0UAS\u00a0 y tambi\u00e9n amenazas terrestres como veh\u00edculos blindados.. Montado sobre una torre aut\u00f3noma del tipo RWS (Remote Weapon Station), instalada sobre una plataforma a ruedas 4×4 \u2013 6×6 \u2013 8-8, opera un ca\u00f1\u00f3n de mediano calibre 30 x 113 mm. El ca\u00f1\u00f3n del tipo \u201cchain gun\u201d es un arma autom\u00e1tica que utiliza una fuente de energ\u00eda externa para el ciclo de disparo, en lugar de utilizar la energ\u00eda del retroceso de la vaina para accionar el mecanismo. Y tal vez la mayor novedad de este nuevo sistema, es la capacidad de cambiar el tipo de proyectil a emplear, durante la ejecuci\u00f3n misma de los disparos. (Por ello se lo denomina \u201cdual feed\u201d). La empresa ve un enorme mercado potencial global para este nuevo producto.<\/p>\n

BELFAST \u2014 Northrop Grumman has launched a new\u00a0Bushmaster M230LF (Link Fed) dual-feed chain gun, designed to neutralize UAS and ground threats, with the\u00a0manufacturer<\/a>\u00a0targeting export customers for future orders.<\/p>\n

Integrated on a remote weapon system, the new 30x113mm medium caliber cannon can be equipped on 4\u00d74, 6\u00d76 or 8\u00d78 land vehicles and allows operators to shift between ammunition types and target types, according to John McCollum, director of business development, guns operating unit, at Northrop Grumman.<\/p>\n

He also shared that Northrop has developed a prototype of the new gun, completed a phase of \u201cinternal live firing\u201d and plans on new live fire trials based off a 4\u00d74 sized vehicle, \u201csimilar to a\u00a0JLTV<\/a>\u00a0[Joint Light Tactical Vehicle]\u201d type, in the \u201cnext six months.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new gun, evolved from the US Army\u2019s AH-64 Apache attack helicopter chain gun, has reached Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL) maturity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat this canon allows us to do is to add the functionality to be able to address Group 1 and Group 2 UAVs, as well as seamlessly, still address the ground targets and have the anti-armor capability that we have in our current M230LF cannon,\u201d McCollum told Breaking Defense. He noted the firing rate of the cannon is adjustable \u2014 a new feature compared to the single feed configuration, with an output of 50 to 200 shots per minute.<\/p>\n

Group 1 and Group 2 unmanned aerial vehicles are at the lighter end of a five-level aircraft weight classification, with a maximum take off weight of up to 55 pounds, per DoD documents [PDF<\/a>].<\/p>\n

Despite Northrop debuting the product in advance of the AUSA trade show in Washington, DC, the\u00a0US Army<\/a>\u00a0does not have a requirement for a dual feed gun, said McCollum. The US Army operates a 30mm single feed cannon under the Counter-UAS, Mobile, Low, Slow, Unmanned Aircraft Integrated Defeat System (M-LIDS<\/a>) effort, led by prime contractor Leonardo DRS.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019re seeing some current requirements come from Europe and other regions for\u201d the capability. No live demonstrations have been planned yet for international customers as development continues.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0September<\/a>, Northrop Grumman and Lithuania signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) committing the manufacturer to support local suppliers in the production of medium-caliber ammunition for Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs).<\/p>\n

Motivation for bringing the dual feed gun to market is linked to Northrop assessing the \u201cUAV problem\u201d for \u201cseveral years\u201d and determining that there\u2019s \u201calways going to be a place for a kinetic solution\u201d to counter the aircraft,\u00a0said McCollum.<\/p>\n

\u201cLayered defense is absolutely key, and there are other technologies that can be used \u2026 and really as that last line of defense from 1,000 meters and in. There are really no other solutions in the marketplace that can be as effective as a kinetic solution, such as this\u201d M230LF dual-feed gun,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Customers interested in acquiring the gun, would need to first make sure they have a \u201cheavy enough remote weapon station\u201d to support it, said McCollum, \u201cbecause it brings so much more capability than a 50 [caliber] remote weapon station.\u201d<\/p>\n
