What do we know about these systems and the long-range Koksan?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been well reported that Russia has a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/united24media.com\/world\/an-alliance-of-authoritarian-powers-russias-relations-with-north-korea-71\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing alliance of authoritarian powers<\/a>\u00a0which includes North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw officers, technical personnel from North Korea in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine,\u201d Zelenskyy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/babel.ua\/news\/111908-ukrajina-fiksuvala-viyskovih-z-kndr-na-okupovanih-teritoriyah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener nofollow\">said<\/a>\u00a0during a press briefing on October 22.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Russian forces have begun training on North Korean self-propelled artillery systems at Russia\u2019s Higher Artillery Command School (VAKU) in Saratov,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/atesh_ua\/5610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a>\u00a0Ukraine\u2019s ATESH partisan movement.<\/p>\n<p>Both North Korean military instructors and other personnel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/united24media.com\/war-in-ukraine\/north-korea-backs-russias-war-soldiers-and-weapons-deployed-against-ukraine-3037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have reportedly been present in occupied Ukrainian territories<\/a>, monitoring and providing training. Despite also being one of the poorest countries in the world, in 2023, North Korea\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/747387\/north-korea-share-of-military-spending-in-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener nofollow\">spent<\/a>\u00a0more than a third of its gross domestic product (GDP) on its military.<\/p>\n<p>In March of 2024, South Korea\u2019s Defense Minister Shin Wonsik, reported that since last year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/united24media.com\/world\/an-alliance-of-authoritarian-powers-russias-relations-with-north-korea-71\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Korea shipped around 7000 containers filled with munitions and military equipment<\/a>\u00a0to Russia. The containers, he said, could have been holding about 3 million rounds of 152 mm shells.<\/p>\n<p>ATESH didn\u2019t establish which variants of SPGs, nor the number that they have. Despite this, the exact size of their military capabilities is unclear due to the country\u2019s secrecy.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea has 8,600 units of self-propelled and towed artillery but the number of systems of each type needs to be clarified, Defence Express\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.defence-ua.com\/weapon_and_tech\/since_russians_started_training_on_north_korean_howitzers_lets_review_what_we_know_about_dprks_artillery-12231.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Defense Express wrote a list, sorted by caliber, using their Western assigned name, of the main self-propelled artillery used by North Korea that could be used in relation to the invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>caliber 122 mm: M-1977, M-1981, M-1985 and M-1991;<\/li>\n<li>caliber 130 mm: M-1975, M-1981 and M-1991;<\/li>\n<li>caliber 152 mm: M-1974; M-1977; M-2018;<\/li>\n<li>caliber 170 mm: M-1979 and M-1989<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The M-1979 and M-1989 170mm caliber belong to the Koksan self-propelled artillery line. Military experts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/missilethreat.csis.org\/missile\/koksan-m1978\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener nofollow\">note<\/a>\u00a0that the Koksan\u2019s design takes elements from Russian coastal artillery.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the Koksan 1979 is currently used by both North Korea and Iran. This could also be relevant to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/united24media.com\/war-in-ukraine\/an-axis-of-evil-russia-and-irans-strengthened-alliance-what-does-this-mean-for-ukraine-and-the-wider-world-1845\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia and Iran\u2019s strengthened alliance, also known as an \u201caxis of evil\u201d<\/a>.
