The \u201cChallenger 2 Life Extension Programme\u201d (LEP) was intended to keep the Challenger relevant into the 2030s.<\/p>\n<p>BAE submitted a design in 2018, and Rheinmetall followed suit in 2019. The projects\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/meet-the-challenger-3-the-tank-russia-should-fear-the-most\/\">merged<\/a>\u00a0under a joint venture to build an entirely new design: the Challenger 3, a new superior tank instead of an updated Challenger 2.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.army-technology.com\/projects\/challenger-3-main-battle-tank-mbt-uk\/?cf-view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Challenger 3<\/a>\u00a0will incorporate a brand-new turret design, an improved hull, more advanced armor, and a new main gun: the 120 mm L55A1 smoothbore gun. In 2024, eight tanks were submitted to the British Army and were undergoing tests in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The British Army now has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/buzz\/challenger-3-best-tank-earth-2024-212923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Challenger 3 MBT<\/a>s, Ajax fighting vehicles, and Boxer infantry vehicles, which form the backbone of its Future Soldier concept and will carry the Army well beyond the next decade. And give the British tankers the most lethal tank ever.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenger 3 Design Specs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Challenger 3 MBT sprang from the British MoD \u201cChallenger 2 Life Extension Programme\u201d (LEP). The MoD specifically targeted four areas for improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Surveillance and target acquisition: Upgrades to the commander\u2019s primary sight and gunner\u2019s primary sight, replacing the thermal observation and gunnery sights with third-generation thermal imaging.<\/p>\n<p>Weapon control system: Upgrades to the fire control computer, fire control panel, and gun processing unit.<\/p>\n<p>Mobility: Upgrades including third-generation hydro gas suspension, improved air filtration, CV-12 common rail fuel injection, transmission, and cooling.<\/p>\n<p>Electronic architecture: Upgrades to the gunner\u2019s control handles, video distribution architecture, generic vehicle architecture compliant interfaces, increased on-board processing, and improved human-machine interface.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16243\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16243\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16243\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Challenger-3-1024x762.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"790\" height=\"588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Challenger-3-1024x762.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Challenger-3-300x223.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Challenger-3-768x572.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Challenger-3.webp 1314w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16243\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Challenger 3 Tank.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The L55A1 Main Gun<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Improvements on the Challenger 3\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2021\/12\/challenger-3-tank-1-of-the-best-on-the-planet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">begin<\/a>\u00a0with the cutting-edge Rheinmetall\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/armyrecognition.com\/focus-analysis-conflicts\/army\/defence-security-industry-technology\/new-british-army-challenger-3-becomes-the-worlds-first-tank-to-reach-5-000-m-engagement-range\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">120mm L55A1<\/a>\u00a0high-pressure gun, paired with the latest 120mm DM73 ammunition. The combination of the gun and ammunition gives the Challenger 3 an effective range of 5,000 meters.<\/p>\n<p>This gives British tankers a 1,000-meter effective range advantage over all current tanks worldwide, including the United States M1A2 Abrams, the Leopard 2A7 tanks of Germany, the French Leclerc, and most importantly, the T-90M tanks of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2025\/01\/russias-su-57-felon-fighter-is-now-fighting-in-the-ukraine-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Leopard tanks, which carry the standard L55 120mm, can also easily be upgraded. The Challenger 3\u2019s 120mm gun can fire a wide range of advanced ammunition types, including the latest armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rheinmetall.com\/en\/products\/tracked-vehicles\/tracked-armoured-vehicles\/challenger-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">APFSDS<\/a>) rounds, high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) rounds, and programmable airburst munitions.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, however, it can\u2019t fire the depleted uranium rounds used in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2025\/01\/challenger-2-sniper-tank-ukraines-precision-weapon-against-russian-forces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Challenger 2<\/a>, but Rheinmetall is already working on the design for one to use with the L55A1 main gun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better Armor Protection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Challenger 3 has a laser warning system, an active protection system with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2023\/09\/11\/rafael-inks-news-deal-to-put-trophy-system-on-uks-challenger-3-tanks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trophy active protection system\u00a0<\/a>from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230514102151\/https:\/\/www.army.mod.uk\/news-and-events\/news\/2021\/06\/pioneering-new-technology-for-challenger-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rafael Advanced Defense<\/a>\u00a0Systems, and layered protection that allows it to identify and neutralize incoming threats.<\/p>\n<p>The Challenger 3\u2019s armor is modular, which makes it easier to upgrade and repair in a combat zone. The armor includes bolts across the turret, hull, and flanks. Its third-generation hydro gas suspension system increases its firing accuracy while the tank is on the move.
