Inspirados en el \u00e9xito obtenido con los FPV,\u00a0la empresa\u00a0Brave I Technology\u00a0(Ucrania) ha comenzado a ensayar Veh\u00edculos Terrestres Aut\u00f3nomos (UGV), comandados mediante FO para su empleo en el frente de batalla en diferentes misiones de combate y log\u00edsticas. Aunque hay muchos desaf\u00edos por delante para su implementaci\u00f3n, la empresa\u00a0testea actualmente siete modelos, que se espera puedan pasar a producci\u00f3n y su incorporaci\u00f3n en las unidades.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Inspired by the success of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/news-features\/russians-erect-mesh-net-tunnel-over-a-mile-long-to-counter-ukrainian-fpv-drones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiber optic cables on first-person view<\/a>\u00a0(FPV) drones, Ukraine is beginning to test them on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/news-features\/new-russian-offensive-in-ukraine-looms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uncrewed ground vehicles\u00a0<\/a>(UGV). Earlier this week, Ukraine\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brave1.gov.ua\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Brave1 defense technology incubator<\/a>\u00a0tested seven different models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Both Ukraine and Russia have been increasingly using hard-wired fiber optics for control links for FPV aerial drones. That\u2019s because control links cannot be jammed by electronic warfare equipment. In addition, the links won\u2019t be degraded when operating low over the ground, among obstacles and in rough terrain because they are not dependent on line-of-sight connectivity requirements found in radio frequency systems. You can read more about the development of this technique in our original story\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/russia-now-looks-to-be-using-wire-guided-kamikaze-drones-in-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cWe are very interested in the implementation of fiber optic so that our [UGVs] can operate at longer distances and help us destroy the enemy even more effectively,\u201d Capt. (Brave1)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Ground drones with fiber optic cables have yet to be fielded by Ukraine, Brave1 told us, adding that the test results were promising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The technology of optic-fiber-controlled UGVs \u201cis still in the early stages, but we have managed to identify some promising solutions,\u201d Brave1 stated. \u201cWhile not yet ready for mass deployment in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, it holds the potential to be a game-changer in certain well-calculated scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">We asked Brave1 to elaborate on those solutions and scenarios and will update this story with any pertinent information provided.<\/p>\n<p>Most UGVs already in service with Ukraine are used for the transportation of equipment, supplies, the wounded and weapons,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/epravda.com.ua\/oborona\/roboti-u-viysku-chi-zmozhut-nazemni-droni-zaminiti-lyudey-804932\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said the director<\/a>\u00a0of the procurement department of Ukraine\u2019s Ministry of Defense, Gleb Kanevsky. They are also used for mine laying and kinetic tasks, such as employing bolted-on machine guns.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How Ground Drones In Ukraine Are Changing The Future Of War\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/skPRtSIJl7Y\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">At the moment, Ukraine is looking to use fiber-optic-controlled variants for kamikaze strikes and high-risk combat operations and not for logistics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cLogistics tasks involving the same or different robots moving along the same route in one direction and back are less optimal due to the potential for fiber-optic cables to interfere with one another or objects on the ground,\u201d Brave1 told us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">One of the biggest reasons UGVs have yet to be used more widely are the challenges with the command links over uneven or urban terrain, Kanevsky told the<a href=\"https:\/\/epravda.com.ua\/oborona\/roboti-u-viysku-chi-zmozhut-nazemni-droni-zaminiti-lyudey-804932\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0Ukrainian\u00a0<em>Ekonomichna Pravda<\/em>\u00a0news outlet<\/a>. That is a problem Brave1 is looking to solve with fiber optics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThe platform must have reliable communication because it can be easily lost due to terrain distortions or other obstacles,\u201d Kanevsky noted. \u201cThe robot must be cross-country, that is, not get stuck in grass, snow, sand, and mud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">While fiber optic cables offer an advantage in operating when there is no or limited line-of-site, one challenge that has to be overcome is the cables getting tangled up on rocks, vegetation and other obstacles. It is unclear how recent testing addressed this issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Radio-controlled UGVs began to appear in combat a little more than two years ago. Video emerged in February of that year showing a Russian variant in service near Svyatovo. The wheeled vehicle featured a remote turret with both 7.62mm and 12.7mm machine guns. Later that year, Ukraine<a href=\"https:\/\/news.telegraf.com.ua\/ukr\/ukraina\/2025-01-11\/5893752-nazemniy-robot-lyut-skhozhiy-na-dityachu-mashinku-ale-znishchue-voroga-na-fronti-foto-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0introduced its own combat UGV<\/a>, called the Liut, equipped with a 7.62mm machine gun. That\u2019s a figure that pales in comparison to the more than one million aerial drones Ukraine will obtain. While a number of UGV variants have already been fielded, the use of these systems is still in the early stages, Kanevsky stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Though Ukraine has yet to field UGVs with fiber optic cables, it anticipated this would be the case eventuality. Back in February, Ukraine\u2019s Unmanned Systems Forces\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euromaidanpress.com\/2025\/02\/28\/ukraine-develops-fiber-optic-module-fitting-for-all-drones-integrates-optical-navigation-module\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">introduced universal fiber-optic navigation modules<\/a>, named Shovkopryad (\u201cSilkworm\u201d), designed for integration into air, ground, and maritime drones. Having universal modules would reduce the cost and timeline for using fiber optics on ground drones because they would be interoperable, offering cost reduction at scale.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u0423\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u0440\u043e\u0437\u0440\u043e\u0431\u043a\u0430: FPV, \u043d\u0430\u0437\u0435\u043c\u043d\u0456 \u0442\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0440\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0456 \u0434\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0438 \u043d\u0430 \u043e\u043f\u0442\u043e\u0432\u043e\u043b\u043e\u043a\u043d\u0456\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Vt9Zkw2uYS0\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Brave1 claims the testing \u201cproved the viability of optic-fiber-controlled UGVs in specific scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cOur next step involves developing the tactics for their application,\u201d Brave1 explained to us. \u201cOur team is currently working on this in collaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The U.S. military too has been developing a wide range of UGVs, which you can read more about in stories found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/category\/unmanned-ground-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. The lessons learned from Ukraine\u2019s use of fiber optics on these vehicles will no\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/news-features\/nato-operations-chiefs-five-lessons-learned-from-war-in-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doubt be noted by the Pentagon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Should these tests lead to overcoming the problem of controlling UGVs amongst heavy Russian jamming and difficult radio frequency connectivity that limit UGV operations, fiber optic links could quickly become widespread on the battlefield, just as they have with aerial drones.
