The Air Force\u2019s top uniformed leader called\u00a0Ukraine\u2019s drone attacks\u00a0<\/a>against Russian air bases this weekend a \u201cwake-up moment\u201d for militaries around the globe, both for defensive and offensive posture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThis shows us that seemingly impenetrable locations maybe are not,\u201d\u00a0Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin<\/a>\u00a0told audience members at the Center for a New American Security conference in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. \u201cWe need to pay more attention to that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cSeeing how we do that in our own homeland defense is one thing \u2026 but we need to think about how we integrate that into our force design to ensure that we create dilemmas for our adversaries as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The Ukrainian strikes against\u00a0multiple Russian airfields<\/a>\u00a0June 1 involved more than 100 drones smuggled across the border and launched in a coordinated attack from thousands of miles away.<\/p>\n Ukrainian intelligence officials have claimed the strikes caused more than $7 billion in damage to the Russian military and incapacitated more than one-third of the country\u2019s strategic cruise missile carriers. Russian officials have not verified those estimates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Allvin called that reported impact \u201ceyebrow-raising\u201d for his staff and other military planners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve always known that hardening our bases is something that we need to do,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we have that in our budgets, to be able to get more resilient basing. But right now, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s where we need to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The top Air Force leader said that President Donald Trump\u2019s proposed $175 billion\u00a0Golden Dome missile defense project<\/a>\u00a0may eventually have elements to counteract a similar drone attack within the United States. But he expected the Ukrainian offensive to speed some discussions on those defensive capabilities in the near future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cIt really comes down to finding the resources to meet all our priorities,\u201d he said. \u201cIf all we\u2019re doing is playing defense, and we can\u2019t shoot back, then that\u2019s not a good use of our money. So we\u2019ll see how the conversation gets stirred up again, based on the strike.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n U.S. officials this week are mediating\u00a0peace talks<\/a>\u00a0between the two warring countries on the possibility of a ceasefire or resolution to the decade-old conflict.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
