Este sistema de protecci\u00f3n activa para blindados, destinado a detectar y neutralizar amenazas tales como proyectiles o cohetes antitanque disparados por el oponente, estaba basado en una serie de radares ubicados alrededor de la estructura, que proporcionaban informaci\u00f3n de la amenaza, generando entonces el sistema la contramedida de neutralizaci\u00f3n. Se determin\u00f3 sin embargo que ello resultaba insuficiente, por lo que este \u201cupgrade\u201d, incorpora sensores que detectan fotones UV en la estela de aire ionizado dejado por el proyectil en su camino, mejorando notablemente la eficacia del sistema de protecci\u00f3n.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" alignright\" title=\"Armata T-14 during the rehearsal of the Victory Day military parade in Moscow\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn4.img.sputniknews.com\/images\/102173\/81\/1021738155.jpg\" alt=\"Armata T-14 during the rehearsal of the Victory Day military parade in Moscow\" width=\"395\" height=\"210\" \/>The new ultraviolet (UV) detectors soon to\u00a0be installed on\u00a0T-14 Armata battle tanks and T-15 Armata heavy infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) can detect rockets and grenades approaching from\u00a0any direction, thus drastically improving the vehicles\u2019 active protection systems&#8217; efficiency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\">&#8220;The UV detectors have already been installed both on\u00a0the T-14 tank and on\u00a0the T-15 IFV and are currently undergoing tests as\u00a0part of\u00a0the Afganit active protection system. We intend to\u00a0complete the project by\u00a0the end of\u00a0the year,&#8221; a source in\u00a0the Defense Ministry who is familiar with\u00a0the issue told Izvestia newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>The new detectors trace the UV photons in\u00a0the trail of\u00a0ionized air left by\u00a0a rocket-propelled projectile. The system doesn&#8217;t just detect a rocket launch; it evaluates the projectile\u2019s speed and trajectory, supplying the active protection system with\u00a0all the data it requires to\u00a0successfully intercept a threat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/izvestia.ru\/news\/606369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According<\/a> to\u00a0the newspaper, the Afganit active protection system previously relied only on\u00a0small radars installed on\u00a0four sides of\u00a0a vehicle to\u00a0detect incoming projectiles. However, this radar system could theoretically be &#8216;confused&#8217; by\u00a0a large volley of\u00a0shells, rockets and even fragments of\u00a0debris flying around\u00a0during a battle, or even suppressed by\u00a0enemy electronic countermeasures.
