In 2023, a staggering 89% of Iran\u2019s oil exports went to China, a sharp rise from just 25% in 2017.<\/p>\n

This surge followed renewed\u00a0U.S. sanctions<\/a>\u00a0in 2018, which isolated Iran from most global oil buyers.<\/p>\n

Iran is among the\u00a0world\u2019s largest oil producers<\/a>, and in recent years, China has become its most critical customer both economically and geopolitically.<\/p>\n

As hostilities in the region intensify\u2013marked by U.S. attacks on Iranian nuclear infrastructure and Iranian missile strikes on American bases in Qatar and Iraq\u2014China\u2019s access to Iranian oil is increasingly at risk.<\/p>\n

This is because the\u00a0Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, a critical route for China\u2019s oil imports, could be disrupted by further conflict or Iranian retaliation.<\/p>\n

While Iran supplies only\u00a0about 13%<\/a>\u00a0of China\u2019s total oil imports, the relationship is strategically important, offering China\u00a0discounted crude<\/a>\u00a0and reinforcing its broader regional influence amid Western pressure.<\/p>\n
