En pocas semanas Ucrania empezar\u00eda a recibir misiles ERAM (Extended Range Attack Munition) desarrollados y provistos por EEUU. Con la mirada puesta en guerras futuras que EEUU y sus aliados podr\u00edan enfrentar, disponer de armas \u201cstand \u2013 off\u201d de este tipo y en grandes cantidades, resultar\u00e1 crucial para tener la capacidad de atacar masivamente objetivos vitales del enemigo.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"pw-incontent-excluded article-paragraph skip\">Washington has approved the transfer of thousands of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/air-forces-cheap-and-fast-to-produce-long-range-missile-is-being-built-for-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Extended Range Attack Munitions<\/a>\u00a0(ERAM) to Ukraine, which will provide the country with a powerful new and relatively low-cost standoff strike capability, it has been reported. However, it\u2019s unclear whether Kyiv will be able to use the new weapon to strike targets deep within Russia, with unnamed U.S. officials\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/national-security\/pentagon-has-quietly-blocked-ukraines-long-range-missile-strikes-on-russia-432a12e1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">telling<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0that such targets are off-limits, at least for the U.S.-donated<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/12151\/after-north-koreas-icbm-flies-u-s-and-south-korea-say-we-have-missiles-too\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0Army Tactical Missile System<\/a>\u00a0(ATACMS).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">According to the\u00a0<em>WSJ<\/em>, the Trump administration last week approved the sale of 3,350 ERAM missiles to Ukraine. The weapons, which have a range between 150-280 miles and are stated to be air-launched,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/cheap-cruise-missile-paired-with-affordable-seeker-from-ship-killing-smart-bomb-eyed-by-usaf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least initially<\/a>, should start to arrive in around six weeks. \u201cSeveral\u201d unnamed U.S. officials told the same publication that ERAM use would require prior approval from the Pentagon, due to the fact that it could strike targets relatively deep within Russia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17511\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17511\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/air-force-digital-missile-model.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/air-force-digital-missile-model.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/air-force-digital-missile-model-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/air-force-digital-missile-model-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17511\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artwork the U.S. Air Force has put out in the past depicting a general notional missile design. The deal was delayed until after U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/news-features\/world-watching-as-trump-and-putin-set-meet-in-alaska-over-future-of-ukraine-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summit meetings with Vladimir Putin<\/a>\u00a0of Russia and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/news-features\/zelensky-in-risky-spot-as-he-meets-with-trump-in-white-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a>\u00a0of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">In January 2024, the U.S. Air Force issued its first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/mini-anti-ship-cruise-missile-that-fits-inside-an-f-35-is-on-the-navys-wish-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public contracting notice regarding ERAM<\/a>, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sam.gov\/opp\/41cd9248a4494117aa19af9c89cd0ee7\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">request for information<\/a>\u00a0(RFI), but made no mention at that time about any connection to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Then, in July last year, the service disclosed that Ukraine was the intended recipient of ERAM, a precision-guided air-launched standoff munition that it was poised to start developing. Of these, Zone 5\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/cheap-cruise-missile-program-to-speed-up-with-replicator-initiative-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is also involved<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S. Air Force\u2019s Enterprise Test Vehicle (ETV). Under this program, the service has picked four companies to build prototypes of a relatively low-cost and readily producible missile, with the aim of informing future cruise missile concepts. This is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/17257\/usaf-wants-swarms-of-cheap-gray-wolf-cruise-missiles-that-can-overwhelm-enemy-defenses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">far from the first<\/a>\u00a0project\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/32669\/air-forces-gray-wolf-program-tests-game-changing-small-low-cost-jet-engine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of this kind<\/a>\u00a0to explore\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/our-first-look-at-the-tiny-cruise-missile-that-aims-to-arm-ac-130-gunships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">similar and related<\/a>\u00a0technologies. There are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/wolf-pack-of-modular-mini-cruise-missiles-unveiled-by-l3harris\">many other possibilities here<\/a>, not least more than a dozen companies that we don\u2019t know about and that were issued an RFP. Looking at the same kind of space more broadly, it is clearly a growth area among defense contractors, both well-established ones like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/lockheeds-low-cost-cruise-missile-truck-is-now-in-testing\">Lockheed Martin<\/a>\u00a0and relative newcomers such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/anduril-introduces-barracuda-m-that-aims-to-disrupt-the-cruise-missile-market\">Anduril<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geaerospace.com\/news\/articles\/big-things-small-packages-ge-aerospace-teams-kratos-build-small-engines-collaborative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Kratos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The RFP said that ERAM would be \u201cpivotal for accelerating Ukraine\u2019s capability to meet warfighter needs efficiently and effectively, and provides an affordable mass weapon to be produced at scale.\u201d The Air Force added: \u201cThe Government is seeking to prototype and adapt commercial autonomous modular open-architecture vehicle\u00a0<em>[sic]<\/em>\u00a0that can deliver affordable long-range effects. The resultant prototype will provide a platform that is mass producible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">ERAM will provide the Ukrainian Air Force with an important new capacity to strike targets beyond the reach of many of the weapons currently in its arsenal, including Western-supplied precision-guided bombs. It would make Ukraine better able to hold at risk a range of Russian targets far from the front lines \u2014 command-and-control facilities, logistics hubs, military-industrial capacity, and airfields, for example \u2014 helping offset Russian advantages in terms of manpower, weaponry, and resources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Previously, Ukraine received\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/ukraine-confirms-jdam-precision-bombs-are-now-being-used-in-combat\">Joint Direct Attack Munition-Extended Range<\/a>\u00a0(JDAM-ER) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/cockpit-video-of-ukrainian-su-27-lobbing-gbu-39-small-diameter-bombs\">Small Diameter Bombs<\/a>\u00a0(SDB) from the United States, as well as French-made Hammer guided bombs. All of which can hit targets out to distances of around 40 to 45 miles, depending on the release envelope and other factors. Ukraine has also received smaller numbers of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/ukraines-storm-shadow-missiles-are-a-big-problem-for-russia\">Storm Shadow<\/a>\u00a0cruise missiles from the United Kingdom and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2024\/04\/29\/italy-has-given-ukraine-long-range-missiles-says-uk-defense-minister\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Italy<\/a>, and functionally identical\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/french-scalp-eg-cruise-missiles-officially-in-use-in-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SCALP-EGs from France<\/a>\u00a0that have maximum ranges of around 300 miles.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17513\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17513\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SCALP-EG-Ukraine-Su-24.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SCALP-EG-Ukraine-Su-24.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SCALP-EG-Ukraine-Su-24-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SCALP-EG-Ukraine-Su-24-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17513\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Ukrainian Su-24 carrying a SCALP-EG cruise missile. In particular, the missile will be in the 500-pound class required and will have \u201ca top speed of no less than Mach 0.6.\u201d The weapon is required to have a \u201cblast\/fragmentation type with at least some degree of penetrating capability and unspecified variable fuze settings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThe ERAM\u2019s internal navigation system has to be \u2018capable of operating in a GPS degraded environment,\u2019\u201d the RFI continues. \u201cThe weapon also needs to have a \u2018terminal Accuracy\u2019 of \u2018CEP 50 w\/in 10m\u2019 (meaning the weapon hits within 10 meters, or around 33 feet, of the specified impact point at least 50 percent of the time) in \u2018both in non-EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) and high EMI environments (includes GPS degraded).\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Russian forces\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/land\/have-ground-launched-small-diameter-bombs-been-thrown-aside-by-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have reportedly been using<\/a>\u00a0electronic warfare systems to good effect against GPS-assisted guidance packages used on a variety of air and ground-launched munitions that Ukraine has received from the United States and other Western partners. The ability of standoff precision-guided munitions to still operate effectively in the face of heavy electronic warfare jamming is also an area of considerable interest to the U.S. military.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Just as important to Ukraine are the significant numbers of missiles involved: the 3,350 ERAM rounds will go some way to helping offset the huge advances in Russian long-range precision weapons capabilities, especially the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/russias-shahed-long-range-drones-are-now-dropping-anti-tank-mines\">Shahed\/Geran<\/a>\u00a0one-way attack drones. At this point in the conflict, sheer capacity is becoming critical to Ukraine to keep pressure on Russia via long-range strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">It\u2019s unclear what aircraft the ERAM missile will be launched from, but Ukraine has adapted its Soviet-era\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/mig-29-fulcrums-are-ukraines-jdam-er-bomb-trucks\">MiG-29 Fulcrum<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/mystery-munition-appears-under-ukrainian-su-24-fencer-attack-jets-wing\">Su-24 Fencer<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/ukrainian-su-27-flanker-pilots-rare-account-of-the-changing-air-war\">Su-27 Flanker<\/a>\u00a0tactical jets to deliver Western-supplied precision ordnance. The MiG-29 and Su-27 have also been fitted with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/ukrainian-mig-29s-special-pylon-for-hammer-rocket-boosted-bombs-emerges\">specialized pylons<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/ukrainian-fighter-jets-using-ipads-to-control-western-weapons\">tablet-based cockpit interfaces<\/a>\u00a0that make it easier to employ GPS-guided weapons. The Ukrainian Air Force has also received second-hand F-16s, which would be another possible candidate. It should also be noted that while publicly released answers to questions from prospective ERAM vendors have specifically discussed launch from aircraft, this might be just one mode of launch for what is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/air-to-air-anti-drone-interceptor-set-to-evolve-from-cheap-cruise-missile-program\">already shaping up<\/a>\u00a0to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/cheap-cruise-missile-paired-with-affordable-seeker-from-ship-killing-smart-bomb-eyed-by-usaf\">a highly modular weapon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17514\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Su-27-MALD-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Su-27-MALD-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Su-27-MALD-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Su-27-MALD-1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last year, Lt. Gen. Serhii Naev, commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said that unspecified air-to-ground missiles with ranges of between 186 to 310 miles were expected to be provided to arm the F-16. Photo by Andriy Dubchak\/Frontliner\/Getty Images Andriy Dubchak\/Frontliner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Another key aspect of the original RFI was the requirement that 1,000 examples of the new missile could be built within two years, for an average production output of around 42 per month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">This also relates to increasing U.S. military interest in weapons, especially those with standoff range, that can be rapidly developed and then their production capacity and stockpiles scaled up, something that is seen as vital when it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airandspaceforces.com\/article\/usaf-three-priorities-china-china-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comes to planning around<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/warontherocks.com\/2023\/09\/revisiting-the-hedge-strategy-with-renewed-urgency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">potential future high-end conflict with China<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">With that in mind, ERAM should also be a very useful real-world learning opportunity for the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Most immediately, though, the ERAM missile helps meet Ukrainian demand for weapons that can engage targets deeper behind the front lines, reducing the launch aircraft\u2019s exposure to highly capable Russian air defenses. Potentially, depending on its propulsion system and flight profile, Ukrainian pilots might be able to launch ERAM from lower altitudes, further improving their chances of survival, and still hit targets at extended distances. This is the so-called Long Neptune, an extended-range version of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/ukraine-now-using-land-attack-neptune-anti-ship-missile-variant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">land-attack version<\/a>\u00a0of the Neptune anti-ship missile. Ukraine famously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/ukrainian-anti-ship-missiles-struck-the-russian-cruiser-moskva-u-s-officials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">used Neptune missiles<\/a>\u00a0to sink the Russian Navy\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/sinking-a-warship-is-a-truly-rare-event-in-modern-naval-warfare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Slava<\/em>\u00a0class cruiser\u00a0<em>Moskva<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 2022 and reportedly began developing a new land-attack version in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">In the past, the maximum stated range of the anti-ship version of Neptune has been said to be around 190 miles (300 kilometers). A Ukrainian defense official\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/ukraine-situation-report-official-hints-at-new-weapons-to-be-unleashed-on-crimea\">told\u00a0<em>TWZ<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that the original land-attack version could have a range of up to 225 miles (360 kilometers). With its extended body having capacity for additional fuel, Zelensky has said the range of the Long Neptune is in the region of 620 miles (1,000 kilometers).
