Major Chinese\u00a0social media<\/span><\/a>\u00a0platforms, including\u00a0Tencent Holdings<\/span><\/a>\u2019\u00a0WeChat<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0ByteDance<\/span><\/a>-owned\u00a0Douyin<\/span><\/a>, have launched new features to abide by Monday\u2019s roll-out of a new law that mandates labelling of all\u00a0artificial intelligence<\/span><\/a>-generated content online.<\/div>\n

The law, which was issued in March, requires explicit and implicit labels for AI-generated text, images, audio, video and other virtual content. Explicit markings must be clearly visible to users, while implicit identifiers \u2013 such as digital watermarks \u2013 should be embedded in the metadata.<\/p>\n

The country\u2019s top\u00a0internet<\/span><\/a>\u00a0watchdog, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) \u2013 along with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Public Security and the National Radio and Television Administration \u2013 drafted the law.<\/div>\n

The new regulation reflects Beijing\u2019s increased scrutiny of AI, as concerns grow over misinformation, copyright infringement and online fraud.<\/p>\n

It also aligns with a broader push to tighten AI oversight, which was made a key focus of the CAC\u2019s 2025\u00a0Qinglang,<\/em>\u00a0or clear and bright, campaign \u2013 an annual initiative aimed at cleaning up China\u2019s cyberspace.<\/p>\n

WeChat, known as Weixin on the mainland, said content creators must voluntarily declare all AI-generated content upon publication. For content that has not been flagged, WeChat said it would remind users to \u201cexercise their own judgment\u201d online.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

WeChat has more than 1.4 billion combined monthly active users worldwide, according to Tencent\u2019s latest financial report.<\/p>\n

In a post on Sunday, WeChat said it \u201cstrictly prohibits the deletion, tampering, forgery, or concealment of AI labels added by the platform, as well as the use of AI to produce or spread false information, infringing content, or any illegal activities\u201d.<\/p>\n

Douyin \u2013 the Chinese sibling of\u00a0TikTok<\/span><\/a>, with\u00a0about 766.5 million monthly active users<\/span><\/a>, according to data from marketing agency Sekkei Digital Group \u2013 on Monday said it encourages creators to add visible labels to every AI-generated piece of content that they post. The platform added that it also detects the source of every piece of content through the metadata.<\/div>\n

Other popular social media platforms have issued similar statements. Chinese microblogging site\u00a0Weibo<\/span><\/a>\u00a0said it added an \u201cunlabelled AI content\u201d option for users to report inappropriate content, according to a post on Friday.<\/div>\n

RedNote<\/span><\/a>, also known as Xiaohongshu, reminded users of the labelling rule on Friday. \u201cFor AI-generated content that is not voluntarily declared, Xiaohongshu reserves the right to add explicit or implicit identifiers as required by laws and regulations,\u201d it said.<\/div>\n

The CAC\u2019s key objectives this year included robust AI content monitoring, strict enforcement of mandatory labelling and penalties for those using AI to disseminate misinformation or manipulate public opinion, especially through paid online commentators.<\/div>\n

The regulator said it would also focus on a crackdown on deceptive marketing on short video platforms and misinformation from social media influencers, while strengthening online protections for underage users.<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
