Un equipo de especialistas de la unidad, desarroll\u00f3 y fabric\u00f3 con impresi\u00f3n 3D el drone denominado \u201cCapstone\u201d, capaz de llevar diferentes dispositivos explosivos para ejecutar precisas misiones de ataque. El despliegue de impresoras 3D (3DP) y otras herramientas de Manufactura Aditiva (AD), resulta imprescindible para las unidades del teatro de Operaciones del INDOPACOM (Cdo Indo -Pacifico), que sufren la \u201c<em>Tiran\u00eda de la distancia<\/em>\u201d a los principales centros productivos de este tipo de equipamiento, seg\u00fan expres\u00f3 el comandante de la citada organizaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 The Army\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/25th-infantry-division\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"25th Infantry Division (Opens in a new window)\">25th Infantry Division<\/a>\u00a0has successfully used\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/3d-printing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"3D printing (Opens in a new window)\">3D printing<\/a>\u00a0to build a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/fpv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"first person view (Opens in a new window)\">first person view<\/a>\u00a0(FPV) drone attached with lethal effects, according to a Tuesday presentation at AFCEA\u2019s TechNet Indo-Pacific conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Lightning Labs team has fabricated a drone that we\u2019re calling the Capstone drone, and in partnership with the EOD [explosive ordnance disposal] team, they\u2019ve developed a detonation system for that drone so that we can go ahead and put lethal effects on target,\u201d Capt. David Velasquez, a multi-purpose company commander in 3rd Brigade, 25th infantry division, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It\u2019s] completely built in house here in the 25th ID, so [I\u2019m] extremely grateful to the soldiers who are extremely motivated. They want to get out here and be proficient on their systems, and they really do work. They can put lethal effects on target right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 25th\u00a0ID, based in Hawaii,has been experimenting with 3D printers to repair parts and build new platforms, especially drones, as part of its rotational exercises across the theater, but Velasquez\u2019s announcement Tuesday marked the first time the division has attached a lethal effect to a 3D-printed drone.<\/p>\n<p>The deployment of 3D printers and other additive manufacturing tools will be needed in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/indopacom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Indo-Pacific (Opens in a new window)\">Indo-Pacific<\/a>\u00a0theater given the \u201ctyranny of distance\u201d \u2014 the significant logistical challenges military forces face due to the vast geographical distances \u2014 of the INDOPACOM theater, Gen. Ronald Clark, commanding general of Army Pacific said during his keynote address Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we think about the Indo-Pacific, we envision vast and diverse terrain, from dense jungles to coral atolls, from frozen Arctic tundra to tropical archipelagos, from coastal plains to the most majestic and massive mountain ranges on the planet,\u201d Clark said.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Army Secretary<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/daniel-driscoll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Dan Driscoll (Opens in a new window)\">\u00a0Dan Driscoll<\/a>\u00a0shared this sentiment, telling a group of reporters that given the success and growing prominence of additive manufacturing, especially in Ukraine\u2019s war with Russia, such tools will serve as a critical capability in the INDOPACOM\u00a0region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way around that is technology and additive manufacturing, where our soldiers are actually able and capable of printing things for munitions or other purposes in the theater or in the area where we send them,\u201d Driscoll said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Further, he predicted that additive manufacturing will receive more funding in the fiscal year 2027 budget, especially given the imminent threat of a potential conflict with China, which the Pentagon has said could potentially happen in calendar2027.<\/p>\n<p>The 25th ID has been gearing up for a potential conflict in the INDOPACOM in other ways, including by being one of the first units to take part of the Army\u2019s larger\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/transformation-in-contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"transformation in contact (Opens in a new window)\">transformation in contact<\/a>\u00a0project. Under TIC, the division was the first in the Army to participate in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/c2-fix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Command and Control Fix (Opens in a new window)\">Command and Control Fix<\/a>, or C2 Fix, Clark said, which is the Army\u2019s strategy to make its current network operations more efficient.<\/p>\n<p>The division was also the second in the service to field\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/next-generation-c2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Next Generation Command and Control (Opens in a new window)\">Next Generation Command and Control<\/a>, or NGC2 \u2014 the service\u2019s plan to combine intelligence, C2 and fires all in one system so commanders can have information more readily available.<\/p>\n<p>Further, in the next two weeks, the 25th ID is conducting an experimentation exposition at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii ahead of the annual Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center rotation.
