La guerra contempor\u00e1nea se caracteriza por operaciones militares que abarcan m\u00faltiples escenarios -desde el aire, la tierra y el mar hasta los cada vez m\u00e1s prominentes dominios del ciberespacio, el espacio exterior y la informaci\u00f3n- y se caracteriza por la convergencia de capacidades tecnol\u00f3gicas avanzadas. Los nuevos vectores de vulnerabilidad derivados de esto y de la creciente interacci\u00f3n entre capacidades nucleares y no nucleares aumentan el riesgo de escalada e introducen nuevas v\u00edas potenciales para el uso de armas nucleares.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Contemporary warfare is characterized by military operations that encompass multiple arenas\u2014from air, land and sea to the increasingly prominent cyber, outer space and information domains\u2014and feature the convergence of advanced technological capabilities. New vectors of vulnerability stemming from this and from increasing interactions between nuclear and non-nuclear capabilities raise the spectre of escalation and introduce new potential pathways for nuclear weapon use.<\/p>\n<p>These new risks have not been thoroughly explored in national policies or multilateral forums. Effectively addressing multidomain escalation risk requires that nuclear-armed states revisit the concept of \u2018strategic stability\u2019 and systematically map multidomain escalation scenarios while engaging non-nuclear-armed states and other stakeholders. The toolkit for avoiding and managing crisis also needs to be updated to reflect multidomain risk scenarios. These and other pragmatic steps can help prevent escalation pathways from coming into fruition.
