Poland\u2019s Ponar Wadowice and Ukraine\u2019s Kramatorsk Machine-Building Plant (NKMZ) have formed a joint venture to produce the Bohdana 155mm self-propelled howitzer and its towed variant in Poland.<\/p>\n
The project aims to supply the Ukrainian artillery system to Poland and foreign customers, as defense exports from Ukraine remain restricted due to wartime priorities.<\/p>\n
Poland continues to field the Soviet-era 152mm Dana self-propelled howitzer, while the planned replacement under the Kryl program remains suspended.<\/p>\n
NATO countries on the alliance\u2019s eastern flank could also emerge as customers seeking 155mm artillery systems compliant with NATO standards.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe establishment of PK MIL SA is a response to the growing demand for proven, reliable, and scalable artillery systems,\u201d Ponar Wadowice\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0in a press release.<\/p>\n \u201cThe new company will enable increased production capacity, shortened supply chains, and more effective coordination of activities in the defense sector.\u201d<\/p>\n Bohdana\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n The Bohdana prototype entered service in May 2022, most notably helping Ukrainian forces\u00a0expel Russian troops from Snake Island<\/a>. Full-rate production began in January 2023, and by the end of that year, 30 platforms had been delivered to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n The wheeled system has since become a mainstay of Ukraine\u2019s artillery fleet and continues to be upgraded based on frontline operational experience. New variants are introduced roughly every six months, reflecting lessons learned in combat.<\/p>\n An estimated 600 guns across all versions have been produced to date, with\u00a0monthly output reaching 40 units in 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n Features<\/strong><\/p>\n Developed by NKMZ, the system is operated by a five-person crew and fires NATO-standard 155mm ammunition, replacing the Soviet-era 152mm caliber used by legacy systems.<\/p>\n It can engage targets at ranges of up to 42 kilometers (26 miles) with standard shells and 50 kilometers (31 miles) with rocket-assisted rounds, with a rate of fire of around five rounds per minute.<\/p>\n The eight-wheeled platform weighs about 28 tons and features an armored cabin and onboard storage for approximately 20 rounds.<\/p>\n
