The German government says it will finance the purchase of RTX Patriot equipment for Ukraine and also underwrite delivery of more Diehl Defense ground-launched IRIS-T air defense systems.<\/p>\n
The German Defense Ministry on April 14 said the Patriot arrangement would cover several hundred interceptors. Ukraine Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said it would include Lockheed Martin PAC-3 missiles. Germany will also fund 36 IRIS-T launchers, he added.<\/p>\n
Germany said it was committing several hundred million euros to support Ukrainian investment in deep-strike weapons, without specifying weapon systems that may benefit from the funding infusion. Ukraine has been developing its own long-range strike systems, while also relying on equipment such as the French- and British-provided Storm Shadow\/Scalp cruise missile. Kyiv said on April 14 that it used a Scalp missile to strike a Russian drone storage facility near Donetsk Airport.<\/p>\n
The \u20ac300 million ($354 million) will allow Ukraine \u201cto strike farther and more precisely, shifting the balance on the battlefield,\u201d Fedorov said.<\/p>\n
Berlin also said it was supporting production of medium- and long-range drones through the creation of a joint venture that could deliver thousands of such systems. Some of these activities are already underway. Quantum Systems, for instance, has teamed with Ukraine\u2019s Frontline Robotics to produce shorter-range drones in Germany for use by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The latest move covers 5,000 drones, the Ukrainian minister said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe German-Ukrainian cooperation will enable Ukraine to better defend itself against Russian attacks by accelerating the pace of innovation in the armed forces,\u201d the German ministry said.<\/p>\n
The two countries have also agreed to exchange battlefield information on specific systems. For instance, Germany would glean data on the effectiveness of the IRIS-T air defense systems, the PzH 2000 artillery system, RCH 155 howitzers and other equipment.<\/p>\n
