The other is General Atomics\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/dark-merlin-is-now-general-atomics-yfq-42a-fighter-drones-nickname\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YFQ-42A Dark Merlin<\/a>. Last month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/usaf-orders-both-general-atomics-fq-42-and-andurils-fq-44-into-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the service announced orders for production versions<\/a>\u00a0of both designs, which will form a mixed initial operational CCA fleet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThe live-fire test was performed in coordination with the 412th Test Wing\u2019s Air Dominance Combined Test Force, a team consisting of active-duty military, government civilians, and government contractors, who worked to refine and validate the models required for a safe live-fire execution,\u201d according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/569990\/air-force-conducts-live-fire-test-collaborative-combat-aircraft-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a press release<\/a>\u00a0the Air Force put out today. \u201cThis latest milestone continues the rapid pace of developmental testing for safe and effective CCA operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The Air Force\u2019s release also says the AIM-120 missile was fired \u201cin secluded airspace over the Mojave Desert\u201d at what is described as a \u201cdigital target.\u201d In its current configuration, the YFQ-44 carries stores externally on either of two hardpoints, one under each wing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18904\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18904\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18904\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/yfq-44-post-aim-120-launch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/yfq-44-post-aim-120-launch.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/yfq-44-post-aim-120-launch-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/yfq-44-post-aim-120-launch-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18904\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The YFQ-44A is seen flying somewhere over the Mojave Desert after the live-fire AIM-120 launch. USAF<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe executed the first weapons shot from YFQ-44A, an important milestone in turning CCA into an operational capability,\u201d Mark Shushnar, Anduril\u2019s Vice President of Autonomous Airpower, also said in a statement. \u201cThis was more than a simple weapons release test \u2013 it demonstrated an end-to-end, beyond-line-of-sight strike against a simulated target. YFQ-44A took off from Edwards Air Force Base,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/andurils-fury-collaborative-combat-drone-will-takeoff-for-first-time-at-touch-of-a-button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our Lattice software<\/a>\u00a0ingested a target track, an operator tasked the aircraft to engage the target, and YFQ-44A fired an AIM-120 as instructed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lattice for Mission Autonomy: An Unfair Advantage for Unrivaled Deterrence\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RpFFScTovII\" width=\"951\" height=\"535\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The Air Force had announced in February that the CCA program had entered the weapons integration and captive carry testing phase. A picture of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/yfq-44a-fury-now-flying-with-aim-120-amraam-missile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a YFQ-44A carrying an inert AIM-120<\/a>\u00a0was released at that time. To date, General Atomics YFQ-42A has not been seen carrying a munition, inert or live. The Air Force and General Atomics have said the YFQ-42A is on track to conduct a live-fire launch later this year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2026\/07\/in-first-air-force-fires-live-shot-off-cca-wingman-drone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to\u00a0<em>Breaking Defense<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThis [new live-fire] event is part of a deliberate, phased test progression that began with inert carriage evaluations earlier this year,\u201d per the Air Force\u2019s release today. \u201cThe initial inert weapons captive carry flights focused on collecting in-flight data to verify the aircraft\u2019s handling. Dale White, Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Critical Major Weapon Systems, also said in a statement. \u201cThese tests provide operational validation that Collaborative Combat Aircraft can execute the weapon employment sequence autonomously within pilot-defined parameters, accelerating capability delivery to the warfighter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The Air Force is not the first to conduct a live-fire munitions launch from a CCA-type drone. In December 2025, a Turkish Kizilelma drone launched a pair of domestically-produced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/40193\/turkish-f-16-knocks-down-target-drone-with-new-indigenous-air-to-air-missile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">G\u00f6kdo\u011fan air-to-air missiles<\/a>. One of those missiles was fired at a physical target drone. You can read more about the test\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/turkeys-fighter-like-kizilelma-drone-shot-down-aerial-target-with-radar-guided-missile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bayraktar #KIZILELMA | G\u00d6KDO\u011eAN F\u00fczesi At\u0131\u015f Testi\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Awei5OAgioo\" width=\"951\" height=\"535\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Later in December 2025, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), in cooperation with Boeing, test-fired an AMRAAM from an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/boeing-details-new-mq-28-ghost-bat-features-eyes-indo-pacific-sales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MQ-28 Ghost Bat<\/a>\u00a0drone, as you can read more about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/mq-28-ghost-bat-has-fired-an-aim-120-amraam-missile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>. The missile successfully engaged an Australian-made\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airaffairs.com.au\/products\/phoenix-jet-uav\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Phoenix<\/a>\u00a0jet-powered target drone.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Uncrewed MQ-28 Ghost Bat showcases its combat capability\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Grx3d8LMoe8\" width=\"951\" height=\"535\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The U.S. Air Force\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/signs-point-to-less-range-higher-performance-for-cca-drones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has long said that air-to-air combat<\/a>\u00a0will be the main mission for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/general-atomics-anduril-move-ahead-in-collaborative-combat-aircraft-drone-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">its initial CCA fleet<\/a>. The drones will also help increase the sensor reach of crewed fighters they\u2019re teamed with. These drones, as well as other designs acquired through future iterative development cycles, could take on additional missions down the line. The Air Force sees CCAs, in general, as providing vital extra capacity, or \u2018mass,\u2019 during future operations, especially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/collaborative-air-combat-drones-will-head-to-pacific-en-masse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">potential high-end fights against opponents such as China<\/a>. By extension, they will also help reduce risk\u00a0to crewed platforms and open up new tactical possibilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThis live-fire test is an important next step in the development of Collaborative Combat Aircraft,\u201d Air Force Chief of Staff Gen.
