(SPACECOM) enfatiz\u00f3 la necesidad de fusionar todos los sistemas de vigilancia y alerta temprana, con la defensa misil\u00edstica. Anteriormente ambas \u00e1reas operaban en redes aisladas, pero las tecnolog\u00edas exigen un mayor grado de integraci\u00f3n. Las amenazas actuales no son solo las bal\u00edsticas sino otras emergentes, muy maniobrables y complejas como las Armas Hipers\u00f3nicas (HW). Por ello, la distinci\u00f3n entre alerta temprana y respuesta defensiva, se ha vuelto un concepto \u00a0del pasado. Para unificarlas, SPACECOM colabora estrechamente con la Agencia de Desarrollo Espacial y Space Defense Agency, a efectos de incorporar un mayor grado de automatizaci\u00f3n e inteligencia artificial (IA), para ganar velocidad en el proceso de toma de decisiones y respuesta, lo que resulta clave para coordinar sistemas interceptores como THAAD, Patriot o SM-3. Se destaca adem\u00e1s, que pese a la incorporaci\u00f3n de\u00a0 un mayor grado de automatizaci\u00f3n, la sincronizaci\u00f3n de capacidades y el factor humano siguen siendo fundamentales en la defensa.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph pw-incontent-excluded article-paragraph skip\">The U.S. needs to change the way it tracks and defends against future missile threats, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacecom.mil\/Leaders\/Bio\/Article\/3616682\/lieutenant-general-richard-l-zellmann\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deputy commander of U.S. Space Command (SPACECOM)<\/a>\u00a0said on Tuesday. The need to do so comes as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/land\/chinas-growing-regional-ballistic-missile-arsenal-a-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">changes in missile technology<\/a>\u00a0are moving faster than the current defeat system can keep up with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">\u201cHistorically, if you start from the high end here, missile defense and missile warning were operating on separate and distinct stovepipe networks,\u201d Lt. Gen. Rick Zellman said during a panel at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/smdsymposium.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Space and Missile Defense Symposium<\/a>\u00a0(SMD) in Huntsville, Alabama, attended by\u00a0<em>TWZ<\/em>. \u201cMissile warning, of course, was going to detect a launch and let people know something\u2019s coming inbound and see a duck and cover and whatnot, and missile defenders were looking to get a little bit more fidelity in their track and be able to shoot down an incoming missile,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut today we don\u2019t really have any ballistic missiles. Everything is maneuvering. (Xinhua\/Cha Chunming) Xinhua News Agency<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">As a result of the evolution in missile technology, \u201cthe lexicon that we\u2019re starting to see is missile tracking, right?\u201d the general proffered. \u201cAnd so missile warning and missile defense are really coming together in that realm. Missile warning was a space legacy mission area, and of course missile defense is missile defense. And you can see how these things are coming together. So really, the distinction between missile warning is almost obsolete at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The U.S. military has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/u-s-infrared-early-warning-satellites-help-investigate-ukrainian-dam-destruction-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0space-based early warning sensors<\/a>\u00a0that are integrated into its existing sensing, and has been for decades. But these warn of launches, they generally don\u2019t track a weapon throughout its flight cycle. For some years now, work has been underway to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/41383\/space-force-plans-to-place-new-early-warning-satellites-into-non-traditional-orbits-closer-to-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">substantially expand on space-based missile defense capabilities<\/a>, to include the start of the fielding of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/36909\/work-begins-on-starlink-like-constellation-of-small-hypersonic-missile-tracking-satellites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new satellite constellations<\/a>\u00a0to help track ballistic missiles, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/how-the-new-hypersonic-weapons-tracking-constellation-will-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hypersonic boost-glide vehicles<\/a>\u00a0and other threats, during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/6876\/this-primer-on-midcourse-intercept-ballistic-missile-defense-is-marvelous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mid-course portion of their flights<\/a>. This is on top of a major push to move other kinds of terrestrial sensing to orbital layers, some of which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/space\/pentagons-plans-to-track-aircraft-from-orbit-accelerated-with-new-4b-spacex-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could potentially have a secondary missile defense role<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">To achieve the objective of fusing missile warning and tracking functions together, \u201cwe have to leverage a couple of really good partners,\u201d Zellman stated, pointing to two in particular. One is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sda.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Space Development Agency<\/a>\u00a0(SDA), tasked with quickly delivering needed space-based capabilities to the U.S. military. The other is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mda.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Missile Defense Agency<\/a>\u00a0(MDA), charged with developing, deploying, and sustaining layered and integrated missile defense capabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The SDA, noted the general, \u201cis developing a number of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/how-the-new-hypersonic-weapons-tracking-constellation-will-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">missile-tracking satellites<\/a>\u00a0as part of their tranches that they\u2019re launching.\u201d The MDA, meanwhile, has \u201ca\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/41164\/missile-defense-agency-lays-out-how-it-plans-to-defend-against-hypersonic-threats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long history of integrating battle management<\/a>,\u201d Zellman discussed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">\u201cSo those two together are really helping Space Command take separate disparate stovepipe information and bring it together,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18966\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/space-bacn-artwork-darpa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/space-bacn-artwork-darpa.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/space-bacn-artwork-darpa-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/space-bacn-artwork-darpa-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/space-bacn-artwork-darpa-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/space-bacn-artwork-darpa-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">\u201cIt also has to talk about decision speed, and this really is going to require us to look at more than man-in-the-loop [MITL], and maybe a man on the loop [MOTL] situation,\u201d he noted. MITL is when a human is fully engaged in assessing and controlling the operation compared to MOTL, which usually relies on more heavily automated systems where the human approves critical decisions, usually based on distilled data presented by the system. AI is becoming a large part of making that possible in an increasingly successful way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The reason to make this change, Zellman explained, is that \u201cwe have to make these decisions faster, and that data flow has to be able to enable our layered defenses \u2013 whether that\u2019s coming from a THAAD [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/category\/terminal-high-altitude-area-defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terminal High Altitude Area Defense<\/a>], or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/category\/mim-104-patriot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Patriot<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/category\/directed-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">directed energy<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/category\/sm-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SM-3<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/space\/7800-interceptors-in-space-at-core-of-1-2-trillion-golden-dome-cost-estimate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">space-based interceptors<\/a>\u00a0in the future \u2013 all that is going to be dependent on our decision speed.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18961\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18961\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18961\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/patriot-over-the-shoulder-engage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/patriot-over-the-shoulder-engage.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/patriot-over-the-shoulder-engage-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/patriot-over-the-shoulder-engage-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Patriot interceptor launch. (Lockheed Martin) (Lockheed Martin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">\u201cAt the heart of all this for the United States Space Command is one of our unified command plan responsibilities, and that is as a global sensor manager,\u201d the general said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">\u201cWe don\u2019t use sensors dedicated to a single mission,\u201d he explained. \u201cThey may have originally been conceived to do space domain awareness or missile warning, or in some cases, missile defense, but we try to take the goodness of all those sensors and use them for all three of those mission areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Under SPACECOM, \u201cwe take those sensors and we dynamically task them and prioritize accordingly, so we can support multiple commands around the globe. (Image courtesy of Boeing)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The command\u2019s \u201cmodern systems, whether it\u2019s a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/2865134\/long-range-discrimination-radar-reshapes-adversaries-calculus-for-attacks-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long-range discrimination radar<\/a>\u00a0or some of our systems that have been around a little bit longer \u2013 like an upgraded early warning radar \u2013 they\u2019re all inherently multi-mission,\u201d Zellman put forth. \u201cA single radar can see an object in space and give me space domain awareness information, and a little bit later it can see a missile launch and provide warning, and then hopefully down the road a bit more\u2026 provide essentially a track so that we can shoot an interceptor at it and kill it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">\u201cAll these three things can be done in the same duty cycle with that same system, and so we have to be able to dynamically task these systems to ensure that whichever is the priority mission at that time is the one that is being serviced,\u201d the general cautioned. \u201cHistorically, space domain awareness information went to space operators, and I would argue missile warning information probably went to both space operators and the missile defense community. But today, that information has to all be put in one data location, and we pull the information we need for the mission we have at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Long Range Discrimination Radar Capabilities\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gBhJTemSKaA\" width=\"1030\" height=\"579\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">\u201cWe recognize that what we do in space at Space Command is really fundamental to what the missile defense community has to do for missile defense,\u201d Zellman vocalized. \u201cSo that really talks about the high end. Let\u2019s talk about the low end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Lt. Gen. John Rafferty, commander of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense, and Joint Task Force-Gold \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/land\/army-downed-more-than-1400-iranian-missiles-and-drones-in-epic-fury-and-12-day-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mentioned some of this today<\/a>,\u201d Zellman noted, referring to an earlier SMD panel. \u201cWe see, I think, the low end on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/news-features\/iran-is-under-attack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Epic Fury<\/a>. (Iranian media) (Iranian media)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">\u201cSpace isn\u2019t a sanctuary,\u201d the general shared. \u201cIt\u2019s no longer just the playground of nations with a lot of money. The commercialization of space has created what many call essentially a transparent battlefield. And because I can see everything all the time with commercial ISR, it\u2019s given our adversaries capabilities that they haven\u2019t had in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThat ISR [intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance], if you couple it with a platform that has access to GPS or some other PNT [position, navigation and timing] system, and then you add in another layer of over-the-horizon comms, like say from an Iridium or a Starlink, and you have a pretty lethal asymmetric weapon system that our adversaries can get a hold of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Regardless of how much integration and automation occurs, it\u2019s still a people business in Zellman\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">\u201cSo whether it\u2019s a combination\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/land\/army-downed-more-than-1400-iranian-missiles-and-drones-in-epic-fury-and-12-day-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">volley of attack drones<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/category\/air-launched-hypersonic-boost-glide-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypersonic glide vehicles<\/a>, the mission at SPACECOM remains the same, and that\u2019s to synchronize global missile defense and space domain awareness using a common set of information,\u201d Zellman said. \u201cBut that synchronization doesn\u2019t just happen in a vacuum; it happens with the joint warfighters that are standing on watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fuente:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/space\/u-s-must-fuse-missile-warning-and-defense-to-defeat-future-threats-spacecom-deputy-commander?utm_campaign=dfn-ebb&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=sailthru\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>https:\/\/www.twz.com<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>El Comando Espacial de EE.UU.
