Rare-earth permanent magnets are small parts with outsized consequences. A traction motor in an electric vehicle typically carries one to two kilograms of neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB); a direct-drive offshore wind turbine can carry several tons; an F-35 contains an estimated 417 kg of rare-earth material (CRS R41744). The magnet sets the torque density of a motor, the size and cooling of a generator, the precision of a servo, and the mass of an actuator. Removing it forces a redesign of the larger machine, and in some applications no equivalent substitute exists. The International Energy Agency estimates that rare earths account for about 40% of the cost of a permanent magnet but under 1% of the value of the car it goes into (IEA GCMO 2026). That asymmetry explains the vulnerability that characterizes this supply chain: buyers had little reason to pay for diversification until the parts stopped arriving.

Western governments have moved faster than at any point since the 2010 rare-earth crisis. Washington has taken equity in a miner, guaranteed a price floor, lent hundreds of millions of dollars to magnet start-ups, and launched a strategic stockpile; Europe, Japan, Australia, and Canada have their own programs. Yet announcements, nameplate capacity, and investment commitments are not usable output. A magnet pressed in the United States or Europe may still be made from Chinese-origin metal, sintered in Chinese-designed furnaces, or depend on dysprosium that only China separates at scale.

This report asks a narrower and harder question than whether projects exist. Where does China’s advantage actually reside: in mining, separation, metals, alloys, magnet making, know-how, or the integration of all of them? Which non-Chinese facilities are shipping commercial material now, and how much? How much of the capacity scheduled for 2026 is commissioned, qualified, and reliably delivering? Can producers outside China meet the volume, performance, quality, and cost demands of large buyers? How much can recycling, thrifting and magnet-free motors take off the table? And what would real resilience look like by 2030?

The test applied throughout is simple. The objective is not to count announced capacity but to measure how much reliable, commercially qualified magnet supply can operate without critical Chinese dependencies.

Fuente: https://interestingengineering.com

El presente artículo analiza la vulnerabilidad geopolítica e industrial que enfrenta Occidente debido al monopolio casi absoluto de China en la cadena de suministro de…

[37,28,24
