Se cre\u00f3 una nueva Agencia Militar \u00a0que depender\u00e1 directamente de la Comisi\u00f3n Militar Central (CMC), presidida por el Presidente Xi Jinping. Se \u00a0sugiri\u00f3 que ser\u00eda\u00a0 en sus \u00a0objetivos \u00a0similar a la Agencia de Proyectos de Investigaci\u00f3n Avanzada de Defensa de Estados Unidos (DARPA), creada en 1957 por el Pent\u00e1gono para buscar tecnolog\u00edas innovadoras relacionadas con la seguridad nacional. Xi ha estado impulsando una reforma militar sin precedentes desde que asumi\u00f3 el mando en 2012, con la ambici\u00f3n de transformar el Ej\u00e9rcito Popular de Liberaci\u00f3n en una fuerza combativa \u00e1gil y moderna.<\/p>\n

The Scientific Research Steering Committee was set up early this year, according to a documentary aired on state broadcaster CCTV that revealed the new department for the first time.<\/p>\n

The committee will fall directly under the Central Military Commission (CMC), which is chaired by President Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n

Xi has been driving an unpre\u00adcedented military overhaul since he took the helm in 2012, with the ambition of transforming the People\u2019s Liberation Army into a nimble and modern fighting force.<\/p>\n

The two most recent episodes of the 10-part series\u00a0Carrying Reform Through to the End<\/em>, which were broadcast on Sunday and Monday, explained the revamp and the new committee.<\/p>\n

The broadcast suggested that the new agency was similar to the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), set up in 1957 by the Pentagon to look after breakthrough technologies to do with national security.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs everyone knows, the internet, global positioning systems, stealth fighters, electromagnetic guns, laser weapons as well as \u00adother advanced technologies \u2013 most are DARPA-related,\u201d the voice-over said. \u201cWe should make greater efforts to promote scientific technology in our army if we want to win the competitive \u00adadvantage.\u201d<\/p>\n

State media reported that the J-20, China\u2019s first stealth fighter, went into service with the PLA Air Force in March. Also in March, CCTV reported that leading naval engineer Rear Admiral Ma Weiming was developing a new integrated electrical propulsion system (IEPS) for PLA warships.<\/p>\n

Ma said the IEPS was aimed at solving the problem of deploying high-energy radio-frequency (HERF) weapons on ships. HERF weapons use directed energy to damage digital equipment such as computers, and could be used in anti-missile systems. China, the US, Russia and India are developing such weapons.<\/p>\n

The new steering committee and the CMC Science and Technology Commission will spearhead scientific and technological innovation, according to the CCTV documentary.<\/p>\n

Song Zhongping, a Hong Kong-based military commentator with Phoenix Television, said the committee should include scientists and leading engineers who were familiar with cutting-edge technologies.<\/p>\n
