Andrew Valenza\/Army)\" width=\"395\" height=\"263\" \/>A recent announcement by an aerospace and defense manufacturer could solve long-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/26\/infantry-units-need-more-mobile-light-artillery-to-counter-russian-capabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">range <\/a>fire problems that have bedeviled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/10\/09\/army-wants-missiles-rockets-and-artillery-that-fire-farther-and-deliver-more-punch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">military <\/a>planners for years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Nammo, a Norwegian company, recently showcased a compact, solid-fuel ramjet <a class=\"\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/08\/soldiers-shooting-artillery-off-ships-tell-it-to-the-marines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">artillery <\/a>ammunition they say will strike targets at ranges of 60 miles or more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">That\u2019s nearly double the farthest-reaching <a class=\"\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/23\/this-army-unit-tested-the-newest-paladin-howitzer-by-firing-hundreds-of-rounds-a-day-for-weeks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">artillery <\/a>ammunition and far surpasses conventional artillery, which tops out at about a dozen miles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">The company has been making rocket motors for more than half a century, according to the release.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">\u201cSome years ago, we began looking at using air breathing motors to help extend their range, but we quickly saw the massive impact this could have if we fitted it to an artillery shell,\u201d said Erland \u00d8rbekk, vice president of technology with Nammo\u2019s business unit for Aerospace Propulsion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Ramjet technology requires a rocket assist for firing, which is provided by the artillery cannon ignition before it takes flight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Nammo plans to test fire the projectile beginning next year or at least by 2020, aiming for an operational round by or before 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">The services are experimenting with novel firing arrangements as well as extending ranges. Soldiers are scheduled to fire artillery off Navy ship decks this summer in the world\u2019s largest maritime exercise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Last year, the Marine Corps fired High Mobility Rocket Systems off ship decks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Both efforts fall within the work that\u2019s being done to improve \u201ccross-domain fires\u201d \u2014 a priority for each of the services, to basically bring to bear a host of precision fires from wherever they reside onto targets for maximum lethality effects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">The Marines are working on ways to improve the capabilities of the HIMARS system and find ways to attack from ships. The Corps also is asking industry to provide a mobile, coastal missile defense system for expeditionary operations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">During hearings in April, senators probed Army leaders about what they\u2019re doing to catch up and get ahead of near-peer competitors in the race to increase range and rapidity of fire systems such as artillery and shortrange missiles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Army Secretary Mark Esper at the time said that each of the combatant commanders he\u2019d spoken to independently brought up concerns about being outgunned.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">The three levels of programs that Esper said he and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley are focusing effort on are tactical, operational and strategic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">The tactical focus right now is on the Paladin Integration Management program, while the operational focus is on the Extended Range Cannon Artillery program. Strategic-level concerns center around hypersonic projectile technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">The goal of the extended range program is to double existing artillery ranges.
