Si bien se estima que, en pocos a\u00f1os los sistemas DEW port\u00e1tiles de corto alcance estar\u00e1n en manos de los combatientes, reconocen que para poder incorporarlos a los grandes sistemas de Defensa A\u00e9rea y \u00a0Misil\u00edstica \u00a0ser\u00e1 necesario realizar\u00a0 grandes inversiones.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/resizer\/T8SvrS_UDvpuyMUdkxiH6fZw4Bo=\/1200x0\/filters:quality(100)\/arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-mco.s3.amazonaws.com\/public\/HQNVXGZSGJCRZKYSTRXZKJ5CRE.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"418\" height=\"272\" \/>WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Defense Department is planning to increase investments in directed-energy systems<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2018\/08\/14\/space-based-laser-weapons-could-ultimately-take-out-missile-threats-in-boost-phase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0used for missile defense<\/a>\u00a0over the next several budget cycles, according to the department\u2019s top technology adviser.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2018\/09\/27\/heres-who-is-running-the-pentagons-acquisition-and-technology-offices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Griffin<\/a>, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, said Tuesday he expects to have usable directed-energy weaponry in the hands of war fighters in \u201cno more than a few years,\u201d but acknowledged the size of a system usable for missile defense requires greater investment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">\u201cYou need another factor of three to four to have as space control weapon, a missile defense capability \u2014 space-based, boost-phase or\u00a0midcourse capability\u00a0\u2014 with a large directed-energy weapon. We need to be in the megawatt class to have that,\u201d Griffin said at an event hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s not right around the corner but that\u2019s not utterly out of reach either. So you\u2019re going to see in upcoming\u00a0budgets for missile defense\u00a0a renewed emphasis on laser scaling across several technologies because we feel we have to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Directed-energy weaponry has been a\u00a0dream for decades\u00a0within the department, but\u00a0Pentagon planners\u00a0and\u00a0industry experts\u00a0have become increasingly confident the use of at least small systems in the near term is realistic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Another potential use for lower-tier systems identified by Griffin is for disrupting\u00a0swarming unmanned systems, something he called a potential \u201ctransformative concern.\u201d Using high-powered microwaves to disrupt those swarms may make sense, he predicted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">More broadly, Griffin called for a \u201cproliferation\u201d of sensors in low-Earth orbit to combat hypersonic threats.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">\u201cWe really need to be closer to the action,\u201d he said about the\u00a0need for those systemsto be in low-Earth orbit. \u201cWe need to be proliferated and reliant, so that removing a few of those satellites by the adversary doesn\u2019t alter our capability. We need to think about space as a domain which our adversaries seek to remove from our use, and respond accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container signup newsletter\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-subscribe\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-subscribe-signup subtitle col-xs-12 col-sm-8\"><\/div>\n<form id=\"newsletterForm\" action=\"https:\/\/link.defensenews.com\/s\/Editorial+-+Military+Space+Report\" method=\"POST\" name=\"emailsignup\" target=\"subscribeFrame\"><\/form>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">But he underscored a point he made over the summer \u2014 that trying to catch a hypersonic weapon with a space-based interceptor simply won\u2019t work, given the speed of hypersonic capabilities and how close to Earth they fly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-interstitial_link\">\n<div class=\"element element-interstitial-link\">\n<article class=\"story-item story-teaser story-teaser-normal\">\n<header class=\" header-spacer\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-3\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-9 text-wrap-stack\">\n<p class=\"excerpt\">The U.S., Russia and China are all pursuing hypersonic weapons. Here are some factors to keep in mind.<\/p>\n<div class=\"byline\"><span class=\"by\">By:\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"author-name by\">Aaron Mehta<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Griffin declined to comment on the status of the long-awaited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/10\/04\/missile-defense-review-complete-shanahan-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Missile Defense Review<\/a>, now expected no earlier than December.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Over the course of the hourlong discussion, Griffin also made an argument for why missile defense decisions should stay at the secretary of defense staffing level, guided by the Missile Defense Agency and broader strategic thinking, rather than be delegated to the armed services.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">As part of a broad reorganization of the Pentagon\u2019s acquisition structure, which also resulted in the creation of Griffin\u2019s office, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2017\/10\/11\/pentagon-to-shift-bulk-of-major-defense-programs-to-services-and-people-may-go-too\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vast majority of large acquisition programs<\/a>, previously controlled by the department\u2019s legacy acquisition office, had day-to-day oversight pushed down to the service level.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">However, Griffin made it clear he thinks that would not work for the development of missile defense capabilities, flatly saying: \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to happen, and if it did, I don\u2019t think it is going to be good.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">\u201cAsking the Navy to prioritize an SM-3 system over another carrier, that\u2019s maybe not a fair question. Asking the Army to prioritize THAAD over another brigade combat team, maybe that\u2019s not a fair question,\u201d he said. \u201cThose are questions of the architecture of what our national defense looks like that maybe rise to the secretary or OSD level, not the responsibility of a given service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">\u201cToday those particular systems you mentioned, THAAD and SM-3, things like that, those are prioritized at the Department of Defense level.
