The new missile is expected to be an upgraded version of the Japanese supersonic\u00a0cruise<\/span>\u00a0missile ASM3 which was developed in 2017 and has a range of 200 kilometres.<\/strong><\/p>\n Japan is developing a long-range\u00a0cruise\u00a0missile capable of attacking enemy targets outside the reach of its air defences, something that will\u00a0be the first<\/span>\u00a0such weaponry in the country’s history, the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper reported, citing Japanese\u00a0Defence<\/span>Ministry sources.<\/p>\n The so-called standoff missile, which will have a range of 400 kilometres and a speed of Mach 3, is expected to be used to attack enemy ships in the event of an immediate threat to Japanese territory.<\/p>\n The missile will be\u00a0created<\/span>\u00a0on the basis of the ASM3 supersonic\u00a0cruise\u00a0missile which was\u00a0completed<\/span>\u00a0in 2017 but failed to get into the procurement plan for the needs of the Japan Self-Defence\u00a0Force for 2018 and 2019.<\/p>\n The decision was made by the Japanese\u00a0Defence\u00a0Ministry, which questioned the ASM3’s effectiveness in light of China’s growing\u00a0defence\u00a0capabilities<\/span>\u00a0and ordered the missile’s modernisation so that it can be\u00a0created\u00a0in the next few years.<\/p>\n The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper reports that the development of such missiles with offensive\u00a0capabilities\u00a0may be out of line with Japan’s “peaceful”\u00a0constitution<\/span>.<\/p>\n “However, the Japanese government adheres to the view that the possession of such offensive weapons does not contradict the provisions of the basic law, in case it is related to self-defence”, the newspaper notes.<\/p>\n In addition, the new Japanese\u00a0defence\u00a0policy plan, which was approved in late 2018, calls for the development of domestically made\u00a0cruise\u00a0missiles.<\/p>\n In December, the Japanese government\u00a0announced<\/span>\u00a0that its\u00a0defence\u00a0budget<\/span>\u00a0will rise to a record $47 bln for the next fiscal year (starting from 1 April 2019). The increase came amid Tokyo’s efforts to beef up its missile\u00a0defence\u00a0and deploy US-made F-35 stealth jets to\u00a0counter<\/span>\u00a0China.<\/p>\n
