China ha confirmado este mi\u00e9rcoles la novena muerte por el nuevo coronavirus que provoca la que ya se conoce como “neumon\u00eda de Wuhan”, y que hasta el momento ha contagiado a m\u00e1s de 440 personas. Tambi\u00e9n hay contagios fuera del pa\u00eds, por lo que se estudian protocolos para frenar el avance. El nuevo coronavirus 2019-nCoV fue detectado por primera vez en diciembre de 2019, en la ciudad centro-oriental china de Wuhan, con unos 11 millones de habitantes. Por el momento, se ha encontrado una cierta vinculaci\u00f3n com\u00fan de los contagios con un mercado de pescado y marisco de Wuhan -ciudad sin costa-, sin que hayan trascendido m\u00e1s detalles.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a troubling development, officials have now confirmed that the mysterious virus that recently surfaced in China<\/a> can spread from person to person \u2014 and the number of confirmed cases is rising.<\/p>\n

Respiratory disease expert Zhong Nanshan, who\u2019s heading the Chinese government\u2019s investigation into the pneumonia-like virus, confirmed to state media that people exposed to other patients have started to get sick, according to The Associated Press<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s unfortunate news because a disease that can spread through human contact is much harder to contain and stop, as evidenced by the outbreak\u2019s growing toll.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe recent outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia in Wuhan and other places must be taken seriously,\u201d President Xi Jinping said on state-backed TV news, per the AP<\/em>. \u201cParty committees, governments and relevant departments at all levels should put people\u2019s lives and health first.\u201d<\/p>\n

Until recently, every case of the virus \u2014 dubbed 2019-nCoV \u2014 could be traced back<\/a> to a seafood market in Wuhan, China. Because there were no cases of human-to-human transmission, some experts held out hope that the virus could be easily contained.<\/p>\n

So far, 198 cases have been confirmed in Wuhan alone, according to Business Insider<\/em><\/a>, and six people have died in the city as a result. Some of those included family members of existing patients or the health workers who treated them \u2014 people who couldn\u2019t have feasibly fallen ill unless they caught it from another person.<\/p>\n

But there are still many unknowns.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe source of the new type of coronavirus has not been found, we do not fully understand how the virus is transmitted, and changes in the virus still need to be closely monitored,\u201d reads a Sunday statement by China\u2019s National Health Commission, according to the AP<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
