The total number of passengers wasn&#8217;t 800, as\u00a0<em>The War Zone<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/42005\/800-people-evacuated-from-kabul-aboard-a-single-c-17-cargo-jet-reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was first to report<\/a>\u00a0based on recorded radio communications, it was\u00a0<em>even\u00a0<\/em><em>more<\/em>\u00a0than that. The Air Force says 823 were actually on that plane, which used the callsign Reach 871, and that this is the largest evacuation flight the type has ever flown.<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force&#8217;s Air Mobility Command (AMC) issued the correction today. The service had earlier confirmed various details about the heavily laden flight, but had said that there\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/policy\/2021\/08\/inside-reach-871-us-c-17-packed-640-people-trying-escape-taliban\/184563\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">were only 640 passengers<\/a>\u00a0on board when it left Afghanistan. Holy&#8230; Holy cow&#8230; Ok&#8230;,&#8221; a person can be heard saying at one point after getting the estimated headcount from an individual on the C-17A.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tjo8qeY4l0s\" width=\"840\" height=\"540\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also not surprising that the crew of Reach 871 didn&#8217;t have a firm grasp at the time on exactly how many people were in the back. The plane had been on the ground at Hamid Karzai International Airport on Aug. 15, 2021, the day the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/42001\/fall-of-kabul-to-taliban-imminent-as-surprised-united-states-races-to-get-its-people-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Taliban marched into the city<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/42019\/situation-at-kabul-airport-would-have-been-difficult-for-anyone-to-predict-says-pentagon-spokesman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">touching off days<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/42007\/apache-helicopters-chase-afghans-swarming-a-c-17-on-kabul-airports-runway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chaotic and terrifying scenes<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/42010\/u-s-troops-kill-two-armed-afghans-at-unsecure-kabul-airport-thousands-more-being-sent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">desperate Afghans tried to flee<\/a>\u00a0the country by air. Amid the chaos on Sunday night, hundreds of Afghans began loading themselves into the back of the plane.<\/p>\n<p>These individuals had been cleared to evacuate with U.S. assistance, but were not all on the official manifest for this flight,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/policy\/2021\/08\/inside-reach-871-us-c-17-packed-640-people-trying-escape-taliban\/184563\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to\u00a0<em>Defense One<\/em><\/a>. Past evacuation flights have seen more people loaded onto Globemaster IIIs, using the &#8220;floor loading&#8221; method also on Reach 871, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/467793\/c-17-crew-members-reflect-on-philippine-relief-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one flight in 2013<\/a>\u00a0that carried \u00a0670 people to safety after Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>The crew of Reach 871 now holds the undisputed record for total people evacuated from a crisis via C-17A.
