Esta unidad, la primera en su tipo, est\u00e1 dise\u00f1ada para proporcionar capacidades no letales como operaciones de ciberguerra, de guerra electr\u00f3nica y de informaci\u00f3n, en apoyo de los Comandos del Ej\u00e9rcito y sus elementos subordinados.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>MUSCATATUCK URBAN TRAINING CENTER, Ind. \u2014 After nearly two decades of conflict against technologically inferior and insurgency-focused adversaries, the U.S. military and the Army are honing their cyber training against more sophisticated forces.<\/p>\n<p>The Army, for its part, is moving toward a multidomain-capable force, which envisions the seamless integration of forces and capabilities across all spheres of warfare; air, land, sea, space and cyber, as well as the information dimension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Part of realizing a multidomain force is meeting the need for tactical cyber and information capabilities outside of U.S. Cyber Command. Following a series of exercises and experimental units, the Army activated the 915th Cyber Warfare Battalion in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/cyber\/2021\/05\/26\/operations-in-ukraine-other-countries-help-army-develop-cyber-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first-of-its-kind unit<\/a>\u00a0is designed to provide non-lethal capabilities such as cyber, electronic warfare and information operations in support of Army Service Component Commands and their subordinate elements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we are is a new organization that\u2019s helping define what it means to do multidomain operations from an information advantage standpoint and then through our innovation and experimentation, that\u2019s what\u2019s ultimately going to get recorded in doctrine,\u201d Lt. Col. Benjamin Klimkowski, commander of the 915th, said. \u201cThe doctrine writers have never done this before. They need our input to help shape that. It\u2019s our experimentation and our operations that pushes that piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The vision is by 2026 the 915th will consist of 12 expeditionary cyber and electromagnetic activities teams (ECTs), each capable of providing cyber, electronic-warfare and information operations. Currently, there are three companies within the battalion with two ECTs under a separate company, consisting of a total of over 200 personnel. The third ECT is slated to be created at the end of fiscal year 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Moreover, the goal is that each ECT will be aligned to specific geographic theaters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9196\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9196\" style=\"width: 1440px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9196\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/LPHQLDCSEBEKJEXQXNYXTBLX4E.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/LPHQLDCSEBEKJEXQXNYXTBLX4E.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/LPHQLDCSEBEKJEXQXNYXTBLX4E-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/LPHQLDCSEBEKJEXQXNYXTBLX4E-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/LPHQLDCSEBEKJEXQXNYXTBLX4E-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9196\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Army will have 12 expeditionary cyber and electromagnetic teams by 2026.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">However, much is still uncertain between then and now as the force is being built. For example, initial and full operating capability criteria for teams are still in the works, officials explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The information space changes so rapidly that tactics, techniques, procedures and capabilities will likely need to evolve on a constant basis. The unit is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/information-warfare\/2021\/12\/22\/us-army-conducts-first-tactical-cyber-exercise-readying-teams-for-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concurrently trying to validate its teams<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 for which training goals are still being developed on the fly \u2013 as well as working on concepts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThe challenge and growing the cyber force is that it takes time,\u201d Klimkowski, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"heading__StyledHeading-sc-123v3ct-0 bPFQNZ a-heading1\"><strong>Innovation shaping the future of tactical cyber<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Despite nearly ten years of cyber operations within the military, there was little to go on for tactical, on-the-ground cyber operations for conventional forces outside the special operations community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cOn the doctrine side, it hasn\u2019t been a struggle, it\u2019s been an evolution. From the strategic operations to the tactical level, the requirements and the threats that are out there constantly make it evolve,\u201d battalion Sgt. Maj. Marlene Harshman said. \u201cDoctrine, if you will, is, \u2018This is how you can do it.\u2019 Well, but what happens if this is how you can do it today but not how you do it tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">From the beginning, the battalion and its higher headquarters were given a lot of latitude to innovate and develop the concepts it would need to shape what tactical cyber means.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/dod\/army\/2018\/07\/05\/how-the-army-will-infuse-cyber-operations-on-the-battlefield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Experimentation<\/a>\u00a0was key and it was something that 780th [Military Intelligence Brigade] and [Army Cyber Command] said, \u2018Hey, you\u2019re a new unit. Take these soldiers and allow them to innovate, allow them to experiment, you got a lot of talent and utilize that these first couple of years.\u2019 We\u2019re not done with that phase. We always want our soldiers to innovate. That will continue through the life of our unit,\u201d Maj. Richard Byrne, the battalion\u2019s operations and training officer, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s pretty impressive to take a unit that was largely ideas, concepts, a lot of guidance from higher and take it to where we are now where we\u2019re starting to create a unit that\u2019s steady-state, a little bit more defined and preparing for support to our theaters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">In fact, they are continuing to evolve training objectives and concepts.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/show-reporter\/ausa\/2020\/10\/12\/us-army-conducts-first-of-its-kind-exercise-for-tactical-information-warfare-unit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">During an experiment last year<\/a>, the unit worked to define key mission essential tasks and objectives needed to validate itself as a ready unit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the big changes between this year and last year, \u2026 the [qualification requirements] that we\u2019ve created weren\u2019t around last year and a lot of experience from the [combat training center] rotations and the experienced soldiers that we\u2019ve got on this unit, a lot of experience went into those and what our training objectives should be, are and will be,\u201d Capt. Gabriel Akonom, an officer with the battalion, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"heading__StyledHeading-sc-123v3ct-0 bPFQNZ a-heading1\"><strong>What will they do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">As the Army moves to become what it calls multidomain-capable by 2028, the 915th will play a key role in the increasingly important competition \u2014 or gray zone \u2014 sphere below the threshold of armed conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The battalion is currently aligned with Army-owned component commands at the theater level and will support lower-echelon units as needed. It\u2019s not organic to these units \u2014 like military intelligence or military police units \u2014 meaning a unit must request assistance from the 915th in a certain scenario based on the mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Specifically, its soldiers assist in targeting and providing non-lethal effects while also helping to characterize enemy networks through intelligence and reconnaissance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9197\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9197\" style=\"width: 1440px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9197\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/4VCJACT2LJGQDFIPKS3O2DMQ4M.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/4VCJACT2LJGQDFIPKS3O2DMQ4M.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/4VCJACT2LJGQDFIPKS3O2DMQ4M-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/4VCJACT2LJGQDFIPKS3O2DMQ4M-1024x614.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/4VCJACT2LJGQDFIPKS3O2DMQ4M-768x460.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New tactical cyber teams will support theater commanders during the competition continuum of conflict.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThe 915th CWB\u2019s unique close-access and proximal tactical capabilities will be critical\u201d in penetrating enemy defenses, Akonom wrote in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/publication\/issues\/59871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Byte<\/a>, an online publication published by the 780th Military Intelligence Brigade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Near-peer adversaries will have very complex systems, necessitating the need to be constantly in contact with them during combat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Meanwhile, officials said the exact relationship to Cyber Command, which can provide unique remote cyber support to a theater, and the unit is still being determined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cIn each theater it\u2019s going to look different because the [geographic combatant command] and then, by extension, the executive agent for that respective joint force headquarters for cyber is going to employ their forces differently,\u201d Klimkowski said, referencing the Joint Force Headquarters-Cyber structure in which a specific service employs cyber capabilities for geographic combatant commands on behalf of Cyber Command.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cWe know INDOPACOM is very different than EUCOM and so it\u2019s going to look different. We\u2019re still working through the nuances of every GCC, but it\u2019s just different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">As a support element to Army Service Component Commands, the 915th will work very closely with the Multidomain Task Forces, which were designed to be in constant contact with adversaries during the so-called competition phase of conflict. Those units possess a specific battalion that focuses on cyber, electronic warfare, space and information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">One of the key differences between the two, however, is the 915th has the authority to conduct offensive operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Officials stressed that in this dynamic domain of cyberspace and information, the unit must maintain its edge to be flexible and innovative, all while continuing to grow and shift with the Army as it builds toward multidomain operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cWe were designed during the global war on terrorism, but as the Army started thinking critically about large-scale combat operations, we too have essentially have shifted our focus on that as well,\u201d Klimkowski said. \u201cWe\u2019re evolving with you and that\u2019s driven some of our thought processes and what\u2019s most critical and what we need to focus on.
