En ese marco, el gobierno de Australia anunci\u00f3 la inauguraci\u00f3n del \u201c<strong>Hypersonics Center<\/strong>\u201d, mostrando as\u00ed otro paso adelante en la I&amp;D relacionada con el incremento de las capacidades del Sistema de Defensa de ese pa\u00eds. El proyecto m\u00e1s avanzado del programa entre ambos pa\u00edses, es el desarrollo del\u00a0<strong>Southern Cross Integrated Flight Research Experiment (SCIFiRE)<\/strong>, un prototipo de misil de crucero hipers\u00f3nico, siendo la\u00a0<em>Universidad de Queensland<\/em>, la instituci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica que lidera la I&amp;D australiana en el \u00e1rea de sistemas hipers\u00f3nicos.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<p>SYDNEY: Australia\u2019s defense minister cut the ribbon at the country\u2019s new hypersonics center Tuesday, marking another step forward for the country\u2019s offensive and defensive hypersonic capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe technology that is developed here will help us to better defend against the malign use of this technology. And to give us the ability to strike against any potential adversaries from a distance and deter aggression against Australia\u2019s national interests,\u201d Defense Minister Peter Dutton said in Brisbane, where the center was built.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9330\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9330\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/AUSDefMin-SecDef-at-Pentagon-scaled-e1643123660186-1024x576-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/AUSDefMin-SecDef-at-Pentagon-scaled-e1643123660186-1024x576-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/AUSDefMin-SecDef-at-Pentagon-scaled-e1643123660186-1024x576-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fie.undef.edu.ar\/ceptm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/AUSDefMin-SecDef-at-Pentagon-scaled-e1643123660186-1024x576-1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Australian Defense Minister Dutton and Defense Secretary Austin at the Pentagon Sept. 15 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dutton also announced a \u201chighly successful defense flight trial\u201d late last year, part of a classified program aimed to \u201ccounter hypersonic threats,\u201d but provided no further detail.<\/p>\n<p>A release says the $14 million center can accommodate more than 60 staff. The University of Queensland there is a leading force in Australian hypersonics research.<\/p>\n<p>Australia and the United States\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforce.gov.au\/our-mission\/scifire-hypersonics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are developing and testing<\/a>\u00a0hypersonic cruise missile prototypes under what\u2019s called the Southern Cross Integrated Flight Research Experiment (SCIFiRE) \u2014 part of a broader push by Australia to build a range of precision strike weapons in the face of China and Russia\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2021\/10\/hundreds-of-china-hypersonic-tests-vs-9-us-hyten-says-us-moves-too-slowly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aggressive development of hypersonic<\/a>\u00a0and other long-range weapons.<\/p>\n<p>The defense contractor Thales Australia welcomed the Brisbane expansion. \u201cWe look forward to the expansion of the defence ecosystem at Eagle Farm, where Thales currently has around 150 highly skilled and experienced staff supporting ADF programs,\u201d Chris Jenkins, CEO of Thales Australia, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Thales works with Southern Launch, Airspeed, Mincham and Mackay Defence to provide tooling and precision engineering, specialized insulation, composite cases and design and launch services.<\/p>\n<p>A hypersonic cruise missile under development by the US and Australia uses an air-breathing scramjet engine and is meant to be carried by Australia\u2019s F-18s and F-35As, as well as the P-8A surveillance aircraft. Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon have separate contracts to work on this.<\/p>\n<p>While the amount of money Australia spent on the center is tiny by American standards, much of the money on hypersonics may well be out of sight as part of the AUKUS agreement, for which hypersonics are a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gov.au\/media\/australia-pursue-nuclear-powered-submarines-through-new-trilateral-enhanced-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">key component<\/a>. While the nuclear-powered submarines have attracted much of the attention, sources here and in the US say classified research and development is a substantial part of AUKUS work.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Queensland is an important battleground in the federal elections to be held before the third week of May may have influenced Dutton\u2019s decision to highlight the new facility. As one of the most senior members in the government, he has many tools to promote his party\u2019s chances, and in Australia defense jobs are highly prized.<\/p>\n<p>Of geopolitical strategic concerns, Dutton said, \u201cToday we face I think the most significant change in our strategic environment since the Second World War,\u201d including from hypersonic technology. The test flight, he said, is important not just for offensive capabilities, but for research in how to bolster Australia\u2019s defenses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll not stand by and watch our country lose its competitive and our capability edge,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For Ukraine Crisis, Dutton Doesn\u2019t Expect Australian Involvement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dutton addressed the situation in Ukraine making it clear that Australia does not expect to send troops should Russia invade.<\/p>\n<p>With the US, Britain and other countries evacuating non-essential personnel from Ukraine in the face of the massive Russian troop buildup, and the increase in the amount of military assistance from NATO countries Australia has kept a very close eye on the region.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he said in a separate interview with Sky News, \u201cWe\u2019ve got a lot going on in the Indo-Pacific at the moment. Australia\u2019s responsibility is within our region. We haven\u2019t received a request for any assistance and we wouldn\u2019t expect to receive one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Australia might help Russia\u2019s neighbor combat Putin\u2019s cyber attacks if they ask for assistance.
