La experiencia de Microsoft en computaci\u00f3n en la nube complementa la iniciativa de Lockheed para permitir comunicaciones seguras y ejecutar aplicaciones de misi\u00f3n cr\u00edtica.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\"><i>CORRECTION: This article has been updated with the correct title for Tom Keane, a Microsoft corporate vice president.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 A defense-contracting giant and a software powerhouse are now working together on 5G technologies meant to bolster U.S. military communications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The collaboration between Lockheed Martin and Microsoft focuses on the intersection of the former\u2019s hybrid base station, a multi-network gateway and cell tower in a box, and the latter\u2019s Azure cloud services, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.lockheedmartin.com\/2022-02-27-lockheed-martin-collaborates-microsoft-advance-5G-MIL-technologies-microsoft-azure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Feb. 27 bulletin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cToday\u2019s announcement brings together Lockheed Martin\u2019s transformative base station technology and the power of Microsoft\u2019s cloud capabilities to deliver mission-critical solutions at the tactical edge,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/it-networks\/2015\/08\/19\/microsoft-azure-gets-fedramp-ok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom Keane<\/a>, a Microsoft corporate vice president, said in a statement. \u201cIt is the latest step forward in our joint commitment to solving some of our nation\u2019s toughest problems for a more secure future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Some fruits of the partnership were recently put to the test at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2021\/10\/07\/head-of-lockheed-martin-space-to-retire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lockheed Martin Space\u2019s<\/a>\u00a05G test range in Colorado. The demonstration, Lockheed said, showcased connectivity between three hybrid base stations and a host of datalinks \u2014 like Link-16, used by NATO \u2014 using the Microsoft Azure assemblage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/it-networks\/2021\/11\/19\/dod-identifies-companies-to-bid-on-its-new-cloud-effort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">companies<\/a>\u00a0described the experiment as a success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cMicrosoft\u2019s expertise in cloud computing and scaling complement our vision to enable secure communications and run critical mission applications at the edge,\u201d said Dan Rice, Lockheed\u2019s vice president of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/5g.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5G.MIL<\/a>\u00a0initiative, meant to integrate and upgrade commercial fifth-generation tech in the military. \u201cInnovative commercial partnerships like this,\u201d he added, help develop and deploy \u201ctransformative capabilities\u201d for use in the real world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Public and private players have sunk billions into 5G, the latest wave of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/smr\/5g\/2022\/01\/28\/new-5g-challenge-to-incentivize-open-architecture-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wireless technology<\/a>. The fifth generation marks an exponential improvement compared to 4G \u2014 in bandwidth and latency, for example \u2014 and promises to reshape how militaries operate, especially in remote areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Earlier this month, Lockheed said it secured\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks\/5g\/2022\/02\/16\/lockheed-to-develop-5g-testbed-for-marine-corps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a $19.3 milli\u00baon contract<\/a>\u00a0with the Department of Defense to establish a 5G communications infrastructure testbed in California. It will be used by the Marine Corps, among others. Subcontractors DISH Wireless, Intel Corporation, Radisys Corporation and Rampart Communications will be involved in the effort, which is expected to wrap in September 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 jQOUvm body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Lockheed previously allied with Verizon to develop 5G systems for battlefield use, as well.
