El ministerio de Defensa Ruso afirm \u00f3 hace unos d\u00edas, haber empleado un Misil Hipers\u00f3nico KINZHAL lanzado desde un aeronave MIG-31, para destruir un dep\u00f3sito de misiles de Ucrania, a 300 millas de Kiev. Pese a que algunos expertos en el \u00e1rea, dudan acerca de la veracidad del empleo de ese tipo de armas, en caso de ser cierto, constituye el primer empleo de un Arma Hipers\u00f3nica en combate. Se suma a ello, la particularidad que este misil dispone de la capacidad de portar cabezas de guerra convencionales, pero tambi\u00e9n NUCLEARES. Esto \u00faltimo y la amenaza potencial que representa el empleo de armas nucleares, para batir blancos en distancias del orden de los 1.000km, es considerado por expertos, como una poderosa herramienta de disuasi\u00f3n por parte de Rusia.<\/p>\n

The Russian Ministry of Defense released a video early Saturday that it claimed showed\u00a0a Kinzhal<\/a>\u00a0hypersonic air-launched ballistic missile hitting a Ukrainian missile warehouse about 300 miles southwest of Kyiv. The strike, if it did occur, would represent both the first known use of the Kinzhal in combat and\u00a0yet another Russian attack<\/a>\u00a0on facilities in western Ukraine near the country’s borders with multiple NATO members. But there are elements of Russia’s claims that don’t quite add up and the implications of the use of Kinzhal in the conflict are limited, regardless.<\/p>\n

The MiG-31-launched Kh-47M2 “Kinzhal” or “Dagger” missile \u2014 which Russia claims can be conventionally or nuclear-armed \u2014 first emerged as\u00a0one of Russia’s ‘super weapons’ unveiled<\/a>\u00a0in a fiery speech from Vladimir Putin in 2018.\u00a0The War Zone<\/em>\u00a0was subsequently the first outlet to identify it\u00a0as a modified Iskander-M<\/a>\u00a0tactical ballistic missile adapted for air-launch. The MiG-31’s ability to reach high-speed and high-altitude prior to release gives Kinzhal a major boost in range and speed over its ground-launched cousin. It also can modify its trajectory outside of a traditional ballistic arc. This and its speed make it challenging to intercept. It’s also worth noting that we still don’t know if it also packs a similar decoy-launching capability as the\u00a0Iskander-M was recently revealed to possess<\/a>, which could also help it penetrate air defenses.<\/p>\n

Kinzhal is also said to have an anti-ship capability, although the true nature of its abilities in this regard are unclear. It is possible that a conventional anti-ship role remains aspirational and it could only be used in that role via its nuclear option, or if it is fitted with an active radar seeker capable of targeting moving vessels. So far, we know stocks of these weapons are limited, as are their modified MiG-31 launch platforms, but they have\u00a0deployed to Syria<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Kaliningrad recently,<\/a>\u00a0indicating an expansion of their operations. Speed and range estimates for the missile vary greatly, but somewhere in between Mach 5 and 12 and 900-1,6000 miles is generally what is assumed.<\/p>\n
