The Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense has organized its latest military drone strategy to focus on three roles: joint operations, tactical, and combat, national news agency CNA reported.
At the joint operations level, Taiwan’s uncrewed aerial vehicles will take on long-range reconnaissance, surveillance, and strike missions across nearby air and sea domains.
At the tactical level, drones will conduct reconnaissance and target identification, draw enemy air defenses to waste missiles, and support joint anti-landing and coastal defense missions.
In combat, the systems are expected to extend the range of existing weapons, speed up target acquisition, and help sustain operations during prolonged engagements.
These efforts reflect Taipei’s broader push to strengthen its drone capabilities amid rising security concerns. In August 2023, a Taiwanese Marine Corps official urged the armed forces to revamp their drone defense strategy to better counter a potential Chinese invasion.

It also comes amid Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s vow to accelerate the construction of its T-Dome multi-layered air defense system, as well as the issuance of new counter-drone guidelines for soldiers.
The defense ministry is set to give a special briefing about its drone strategy to the Legislative Yuan’s Foreign and National Defense Committee this Thursday.
Doubling Down on Drone Defense
Taiwan is rushing to stay ahead of threats to its national security by equipping its soldiers with drone proficiency.
The island nation revealed plans in May to create its first-ever army drone units later in 2025. In August, it incorporated drone operations into its soldier training program.
The Ministry of National Defense said advanced tactical drone training will be led by the army, navy, air force, and marine corps centers, while the training will be rolled out in phases.
Alongside this, Taipei is acquiring a diverse fleet of drones, including six surveillance and tactical types and four attack variants, such as the Jianxiang, Jingfeng, Spring Knife 300, and ALTIUS-600.
