The software is intended to create a 3-D full-anatomy avatar of individual soldiers irrespective of gender, size and shape.

So far, the first-generation avatar project has developed a total of 250 male avatars for evaluation purposes.

Mathematical modeller closely associated with the USARIEM Project said Gary Zientara said: “This strategy has the possibility to create a large library of avatars, indeed, an online avatar ‘army’ available for research use, and, as importantly, can provide individualised avatars representing uniquely specialised members of special units.

“Creating avatar models with this software enables individualised physiological modelling where an individual soldier’s avatar can be clothed and moved through different postures and positions in order to be able to test angles of vulnerability and eventually even exercise and test physiological responses in any climatic environment.”

The computer programme has been developed using body surface-scanning technology provided by the Anthropometry Team and Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC).

The project is expected to assist the US military in carrying out easier and safer simulations by minimising the involvement of human participants.
