Defense firm General Atomics has developed a new multidomain surveillance radar system for the U.S. Army.
The so-called “Eagle Eye” multidomain surveillance radar system is designed to identify and track aerial targets — small drones in particular.
According to its developers, the new radar will be outfitted on the U.S. Army’s “Gray Eagle” drones, which are otherwise known as the 25M variant.
Capable of detecting targets up to 50 miles away — and up to 125 miles away at sea — the radar is expected to improve detection of the threat posed by drones, particularly small drones and even drones comprised of balsa wood.
The developers suggest that the Gray Eagle Drones outfitted with the Eagle Eye radar can travel alongside larger drones capable of shooting down potentially hostile entities once they are detected and confirmed by the Gray Eagle Drones.
