El anuario 2017 del Instituto para la Paz de Estocolmo (SIPRI) recoge datos sobre el gasto militar mundial: en 2016 fue de 1,686 billones de dólares, cifra equivalente al 2,2% del PIB mundial o 227 dólares por persona. El gasto total fue más o menos constante en comparación con 2015, solo un 0,4% superior en términos reales. El gasto militar en América del Norte presenció su primer incremento anual desde 2010, mientras que en Europa Occidental creció un 2,6% en 2015, siguió aumentando en Asia y Oceanía y Europa Oriental, pero cayó en África, América Central y del Sur y Caribe y en los países de Oriente Medio . Estados Unidos siguió siendo el mayor presupuesto militar en 2016, Su gasto creció un 1,7% en relación con 2015, el primer incremento anual desde 2010, año en que el gasto militar estadounidense alcanzó su nivel más alto… En 2016 el SIPRI recabó información fiable y congruente sobre el gasto militar de 148 países , la serie ampliada de datos en algunos casos se remonta hasta 1949. Al ofrecer datos en dólares constantes y actuales y como porcentaje del PIB, la serie ofrece indicios sobre la dinámica del gasto militar y permiten analizar las tendencias a largo plazo en diferentes regiones y países.
The SIPRI Military Expenditure Database contains consistent time series on the military spending of countries for the period 1949–2016.
Military expenditure in local currency at current prices is presented according to both the financial year of each country and according to calendar year, calculated on the assumption that, where financial years do not correspond to calendar years, spending is distributed evenly through the year. Figures in constant (2015) and current US $, as a share of GDP and per capita are presented according to calendar year. Figures as a share of government expenditure are presented according to financial year.
The availability of data varies considerably by country, but for a majority of countries that were independent at the time, data is available from at least the late 1950s. Estimates for regional military expenditure have been extended backwards depending on availability of data for countries in the region, but no estimates for total world military expenditure are available before 1988 due to the lack of data for the Soviet Union.
